NEF Protector Jamming update. FIXED!

Well after many frustrations and was about decided to get rid of the darn thing. I solved the problem. Most of you know that I was having problems with this thing jamming on the last two rounds. (4the & 5th rds.) This started happening after I cleaned it with Winchester Gun Powder Cleaner with melted my magazine follower. So I ordered a new follower, Wolff heavy duty spring. Still jammed. So today I figure what the Heck! Im taking this thing apart and Im going to fix it or break it. So here I go took the thing down, ran fine sand paper, steel wool, etc to all the rough edges which were alot. I polish this gun from top to bottom. Cleaned it up again and went outback. Still jammed on the last round. So I decided. I have two magazine springs; so why not put them together and see what happens. I had a very stiff spring there. Loading was kinda hard the first try. But it cycled like a sewing machine. Loaded it up again which was a lil bit smoother. But still stiff. Fired off all five rounds no problem. Loaded her up again, test fired no problem. So lesson learn. If its jamming from the magazine entertwine two springs together and get back to shooting. Worked for me!

Max, The original spring is a few inches longer than the wolff. But neither are reliable alone. So I just rigged them together and now the gun is up and running again. Believe me it has some kind of tension behind it now. I havent tried the 3in mags yet. I will try them tomorrow.

Alot of 870 parts are interchangeable. Can anyone tell me if this will fit my NEF? BUTLER CREEK REMINGTON 870 PROTECTOR FOLDING STOCK

Dude...just buy a new spring like advised. What is the replacement follower made of? If it's plastic it could break over time with too much tension slamming it into the receiver after the last round is extracted from the mag tube. I have the Protector's cousin (the 982), and I bought the Wolff spring the right length and have had no problems. (Along with the Brownell's SS follower.)

Dude! I did buy a new follower and Wolff spring still didnt work. So I just put the two springs (original and a Wolff replacement) together and it works fine now. Do you guys know of any better quaility springs than Wolff? If so let me know.

You didn't fix anything. That is classic "shadetree" "jury riggin". Not to offend you but you cannot leave that gun loaded long with that excessive pressure deforming the shells. I have never had a single failure to feed in thousands of rounds in my 500... Same spring from day one. It is super weak feeling and still feeds flawlessly. It don't hiccup even when pointing straight down. I would look at how far the shell lifter is pushing the shell stop bar. It may just need to push it a 1,000th or so mre. If you want to test this possibility, just try putting a layer at a time of scotch tape to the lifter's outside surface and cycle it. If it works then a simple tweak to widen it will solve the issue. Or maybe file off a L.R.C.H. (unit of measure for very little) from the tip of the shell stop bar.

Hope this helps,
Brent

You purchased the Wolff spring for the 870 4+1 shotgun. The mag tube on the 870 is shorter than the 982 mag tube and the spring will be too short in the 982. You should have purchased the Wolff universal spring. It comes 40" long and you can cut it to the right length. The right length for a extra power spring is 8" to 10" past the end of the mag tube or tube extension if you have one installed.

Hopefully the two springs combined don't cause a reliability problem down the road. It is a home defense shotgun.

Give me an email and I will send you a Wolff extra power spring the right length.

:o My bad, ya'll :o I failed to consider the wrong spring theory Max brought up... That would also make sense too!

hotdogs, Not offended at all. Thanks for the info.

Max thanks for the info as well. The universial spring is on the way.

if this doesnt solve the problem Ill just get rid of it and buy a mossy.

Weak mag tube springs are a problem in a lot of shotguns including the Mossberg 500. The spring is much harder to replace in the 500 because you have to remove the whole mag tube from the receiver to do it. Had you purchase the right spring there wouldn't be an on going problem.
