Im not sure what info you are looking for. You can change out the barrels you have. If you want a different caliber barrel you have to send in your reciever so they can match it to the barrel. From my experience with my handi-rifle they are very good rifles. My .243 barrel has a burris scope and shoots near moa with remington cor-lokt 100gr. ammo. My other barrel is a 20ga. with a 3'' chamber and its also a good shotgun. Dont use the 20ga. much but I have shot it and its accurate. Overall, I think the wood could be better but for the price im not complaining.

My #2 son, (yes he hates that monicker)has three barrels for his a 45-70, .270 win, and a .223 rem. And they shoot very fine!;)

well, the 45-70 does anyone know the c.u.p pressure unsure what type of rounds to use in it. I was also just wanting general info about the gun, does shot well, what kind of problems they might have, although I am not looking to sell it what would the price range be for it, or any other knowledge you might think I should know.

new handi rifles--around 269.00.

check gunbroker for auctions

i shoot a contender carbine 16 inch in 45-70 using my own cast bullets--much cheaper than 2.00 a pop for factory. loads used are 320/405gr. with trail boss powder and keep max vel 11-1200fps--more than enough to hunt anything up to 150yds.

you can find different load schedules and ammo--essentially trapdoor, marlin, ruger #1. with a google search. light loads are fun, accurate and deadly. heavy loads=cannon and will loosen filllings.:)

I like them so much I own five. One is chambered in .45-70; my most recent purchase. I reload, and have fired up to 'Ruger No. 1' loads in it. Your shoulder will determine what you shoot.

Handi's are very accurate. Also very simple. Some tend to string shots vertically, some FTF due to light hammer strikes, actions open upon firing (happened in my .500 Mag), but this is often fixed by simply cleaning the barrel lock bar. The trigger pull is heavy from the factory, but dad probably had that fixed when he sent it back to have new barrels fitted. All that being said, the above problems are still very rare and usually simple, home fixes.

As far as price, my purchase instinct is usually triggered around $180- new or used. But I'm cheap. The Graybeard site is a wealth of knowledge; people doing lots of unique stuff over there. I would venture to say your father was a man who valued function over form. Handi's aint pretty, but boy do they work! If you choose to sell it, it may be worth more parted out over at Greybeard.

thanks to all that have replied. from the sound of it, it should be fun shooting with no real big concerns on function or accuracy.

Great guns

Awsome guns. I have one in stainless in 20 gauge and 30-30. carries great in the woods. Shot more partridge with it than any other gun. I use the 30-30 barrle for back up for deer and pike shooting in the spring when the marshes flood on Champlain. One option if you don't have a scope mounted on some of your barrels get peep sights handles and balances so well on that rifle.

I have one in .223 heavy barrel. I plan to add a couple new barrels this year I was disappointed to find that they discontinued the .45 Colt barrel. I'll probably go with a .44 mag and a 20 gauge shotgun.

I own five Handis total. One shotgun, four rifles. They're great little guns, and JKump is right, his link to Graybeard's Outdoors is loaded with Handi information.

I've tried up to modern Lever Action rounds in mine, but recoil becomes a problem in such a light rifle. I've settled on a cast bullet load that runs about 1300 fps, which is plenty good medicine for the woods I hunt. Any factory ammo can be shot in it, although I don't think I'd fire anything loaded to Ruger #1 levels in mine. The rifle might handle it, but the beating on the stock end would be severe.

great rifles overall. One of the few guns out there that allows you to own several calibers with out breaking the bank. My dad has one in 223 that is amazingly accurate and we had a couple of older shotguns. Only problem we have ever found is that once in a while the firing pin will break, Not a big deal it takes like 5 mins to swap in a new one. Might be an issue on our older shotguns and they fixed that problem on the newer guns. not sure.

I had one for several months in .22 Hornet. I changed the ejector to an extractor only, and loved it.
I only traded it because I wanted a Contender Carbine, so I got one with a 16" barrel in .22 Hornet. I then sold that barrel (STUPID ) and got a Bullberry barrel in .22 K-Hornet. It's a really nice barrel, but I wish I'd kept the 16" Hornet as well. It was a tack-driving son of a gun.

My Handi-Rifle would shoot right at an inch to an inch and an eighth at 100yds all day long. Nice little rifle. I'm not sure how much "fun" it would be shooting warm 45-70 loads out of it, but hey... to each his own, right? I wouldn't hesitate to buy another if I found a caliber I really wanted.

Your going to love that rifle, I own three...A .357, .44mag, and a 20ga, I just can't get enough of them. I'm looking for a .223 next.

I sold my .243 Handi after only a couple months. It was on target for the first shot but required almost an hour to cool back down to where it would even get on paper at 100 yards. Barrel was way too light.
As for being a light rifle to carry, I agree. But, I wouldn't want to shoot one in 45-70. Ouch!

H & R

Your father was a wise man. With those three barrells you can hunt about anything. The H&R's are very accurite right out of the box. As a part time gunsmith I have fired a lot of weapons over the years. The most accurite rifle I ever fired was a H&R Ultra 25-06. That rifle was amazing. As far as the trigger goes, the more you shoot it, the smoother the trigger will get. Your father left you quite a gift, take care of it and your great grandchildren will enjoy using it.:D
