To help you we need more information like what is the gun going to be used for? If you're going to hunt deer in the brush a rifle is prefered. If you're going to fish in Alaska's grizzley country, as long as you can handle it, a large caliber pistol is called for.

You must consider your skill when deciding because it does little good to miss a target even though you have an adequate weapon/caliber combination.
