Need your help on Sig 226 preban Mecgar mags!!

I just recently bought a preban Mecgar Sig 226 15 round magazine off of gunbroker. The mag was advertised as being new and a preban mag. I received the mag, and upon my initial inspection, the mag looked new and genuine Mecgar. What I did not like was the fact that the whole back side of the mag looked like it had been sanded. I do not think it is normal, but I have never seen a preban Mecgar, only factory Sig's of which I own two. What I need to know is where did Mecgar start putting the restricted information on their mags? If it was on the back side, then I surely have been duped, and will dispose of the mag pronto!! Anybody that owns one the preban Mecgars, please let me know as soon as possible.
Thanks, Sling Shot

OK, I have been told by a gentleman that preban Mecgar mags have the sanded look on the back side. Anybody else want to take a crack at this? Sling Shot

I also have one of those magazines. Not sure if the back is "sanded", but tell ya what -- I'll take a pic of mine with my digital camera and post it next week so we can compare. HTH,

Greetings, new poster here.

I purchased 2 aftermarket 226 mags years ago, I don't recall the brand, but both are identical, and both have a brushed or sanded look along the entire length of the back, but the back is finished, blued or parked, whatever, just like the rest of the mag. I don't think they are marked in any way, but they take down just like factory mags.

FWIW, they function exactly like my factory mags, never had a hiccup with any. I have to look at the SIG markings on my factory mags to tell them apart.

Thanks men. The Mecgar mag that I have has the sanded or brushed look. The back side of the mag is also finished in the same color of blueing as the rest of the mag. I can run my fingers across the sanded or brushed part, and feel the marks left by whatever type of machining process was used. Anyway, the blueing looks good, and it does not look like a fake job. I just wonder why Mecgar would do this to their mags? Maybe to give them that distinct look? Maybe there is no cause for alarm, but I did want to make sure about it before I kept this mag. Thanks, Sling Shot

What you describe is how the blued Mec-Gar SIG mags are finished. I have other M-G mags that are not finished that way. My guess is that after the seam in the rear was welded, it was finished with a grinder or other machinery that left the back very rough. Since it doesn't affect function, they left it that way. It's an example of cutting corners, although it's a relatively unimportant corner.

I have a bunch of USA brand mags that ALL have that type of finish on the back of them. I've never seen one of the MECGARs finished that way. Of course, I've never even seen a preban MECGAR (I want some for my SIG!).

I think JNewell hit the nail on the head about the welds. The preban Sig factory mags have the Z-weld whereas the Mecgar is welded different. Just wanted to let everybody know that this Mecgar mag has Made in Italy stamped on it and Mec-gar stamped on it. The Mecgars seem to be well made, and are really nice looking mags except for the brushed back side which should not effect fuction in the least. Compared to Sig preban factory mags which are getting outrageous, I think I will be purchasing more Mecgars in the near future.

I have a couple of 17-round Mec-Gars and they both have the grind marks on the back. It's just where they gound down the weld bead.

Okay, I went home last night and I couldn't find any of my Mec-Gar high-caps (they're elsewhere, hehe) but I did find two Mec-Gar 10 round magazines in nickel for the P226:

Are these the "grind" marks? If so, then it's perfectly normal -- I have seen these grind marks on my P226 MG high-caps and my Astra A100 MG high-caps.

Incidentally, CDNN is still selling these nickeled mags for $12.99. :)

jthuang: Yes, that is what the back side of my Mecgar looks like. Thanks for taking the time to post the picture. Sling Shot

I have some of the blued 17-rd mags, and they're considerably rougher on the back. As I said, I don't think there's any functional issue here, and I don't think you need to fear that your mags are not genuine Mec-Gar.
