Well this past saturday i was given quite a bit of money for my high school graduation and this august i will turn 18 and well i got the money burning a hole in my pocket and i want to pick something up and i really dont want to spend more than 400 dollars (maybe a little more) any suggestions on what i should get im open to any ideas

btw i am not a new shooter i've been shooting my dads guns for a while now ( stag/bushmaster piston ar-15,beretta 92fs,sig mosquito, ruger 10-22,sig P229,benelli m2 tactical ) also right now my dream guns are a marlin 1895 45-70 and a ptr-91 but I want to work for those guns to make them that much better

First question, what do you want to do with this gun? Shoot paper at 25yards? 600 yards? Ground squirrels? Elk?

What sort of shooting are you wanting to do?
Plinking, varmint shooting, medium game, long range?
Are you even wanting a rifle? Or are you considering a pistol or shotgun too?

Every shooter needs a good 22lr.
Cheaper for plinking meaning you can do a lot more shooting than any other gun.
Also great for small game under 100yards. And coyotes if you can get close enough.

My first gun want a Remington 597 and its the gun I use the most.

If your wanting a centerfire, you can't really look past an AR15.
I don't own one because they're too expensive where I live, so I'm not an AR fan boy.
But you can use one for cheap plinking, varmint, medium game, and if you get a reasonable one long range shooting isn't out of the question.
Only problem is for under $400 your not going to get a good new one.

So I'd recommend a semi auto 22lr, and go for a Remington 597, but install a volquartsen extractor.

Just don't get a 10/22, no where near as good as the 597.
(now i shall climb into my foxhole and prepare for incoming).:D

buy a stainless steel revolver or a shotgun...you could also buy a rifle since that will probably come in handy at some point in your life if not sooner than later. I recommend whichever firearm you choose buying one of a higher, stronger caliber so you don't decide "oh that isn't powerful enough to hunt with my buddies" or "if I use this as a self defense and/or home defense weapon someday it isn't to me liking or preference"

to answer ur guys question im not going to hunt with it at all it just gonna be a range gun (0 yards through as far as the bullet will go) it will be something to call my own while i shoot with my dad and his friends (if the time presents itself i will use it for HD no matter what it is) and yes i am considering a rifle, pistol, or shotgun only problem with a pistol is that i have to be 21 where the rifle or shotgun i could buy myself

i have to agree with these guys on the .22. cheap, easy and most of all fun to shoot. when i take me 308 to the range shoot on average 40-60 rounds. when i take the 22 i shoot a minimum of 200 rounds. .17 is also a really fun small caliber gun.

i could give you any number of rifle options, but none are really ideal for hd.

you could always buy a shotgun and buy an add on slug barrel. then you can shoot some distance and also have a shotgun/ hd gun.

Get a Marlin Model 60 or 795, or a Ruger 10/22 and tons of ammo. Wise choice. Get the more expensive stuff later when you can afford it, have a place of your own, and are better at it.

I know what you guys are saying and as far as my post we all know what opinions are like....my thing is like one never forgets his first car.....I say buy an all purpose or I should say multipurpose, longterm firearm that can be used his whole life. A nice shotgun will do this and a rifle can be used for a lifetime...plinking practicing now.....farm rifle someday when he has a family, etc.

Sounds like you have plenty of range guns to use now.Put that fire out in your pocket & start saving for something special you really want.

Special aint cheap. Yes I know thats not what you young guys want to hear.

thanks for the replies guys and ive been thinking about a Mosin Nagant its a cheap rifle to buy and a cheap rifle to feed what do u guys think

I'm going to be a total and complete prat...

You just graduated high school and you can't use complete sentences, punctuation, or capital letters?

Just a quick reminder to everyone about TFL's Rules of Engagement, particularly this one:

We don't expect people to write like Faulkner.

But we expect some effort.

this young man is not the only HS Grad. who has these same qualities. i have a couple of grand kids who send me notes that i need an interpreter to figure out what their message is about.

i was given quite a bit of money for my high school graduation
do not get in a hurry, do some thinking about what you NEED and what you will use the gun for, then go for it, i too do not recommend a 10-22.

I'd definitely go for a Semi auto 22.

A Mosin would be ok I guess, ammo is pretty cheap, but they're not overly accurate and not to nice to the shoulder.

If you are considering second hand, I would look into a good used AR15.

OP, have you thought about picking up a good used .308 - say a bolt action hunting rifle? Fun to shoot, ammo is common - wouldn't say cheap (what centerfire ammo is these days - sheesh) - and lots of versatility.

Make sure your dad or someone that is also knowledgeable is with you if you decide to go this route so that they can help you look over the rifle (borelight, etc.) and you don't make an emotional decision...

Just my humble $.02, and with the real rate of inflation these days that probably isn't worth too much :)

Post back and let us know what you get!

My vote is for a pistol caliber carbine.
9mm in semi-auto or 38/357 in a lever action, unless you are going to reload.
Then any caliber you wish.
