Need suggestions

I'm about to graduate from med school and my wife said that I could buy something in the $700-800 range. I was thinking about getting an AR, but I have an AK-74 that I converted from a Saiga, and I'm not sure if I want something with a cartridge so similar. I toyed with the idea of another handgun, but I think I want to stick with a rifle.

So, I'm looking for some suggestions. I thought about an AR-based 308, or some FAL clone, etc. I do like the 308 cartridge, just not sure what my options are for an affordable rifle with it. Thanks fellas.

Depends on what you want to hunt/plink/paper-punch.

WIDE range of fun rifles out there:)

You can go from a 100-rounds per mag Calico Liberty 9mm carbine to a Marlin 1985SBL .45/70 lever-action,
not to mention eerything in between...bolt-action & semi-auto.

LOTS of choices in that price range. Even the well-touted Marlin XS7 in 308 starting at $299...

So...what do you want your new gun to DO??

The reason that I was looking at semi-auto 308 is that not only would it be fun to shoot, but it could also be used for hunting. Plus the caliber is not too big, but isn't as similar to the 5.45 as a .223 is.

For that money...build your own AR-10

You'll learn more that way & most likely have a better rifle :)

DPMS has a nice AR10 for $850, though...

If you buy used that will get you a decent bolt action and scope for long range work or hunting. Many people on this forum like the Savage rifles and you can pick one up new for what the other brands are used. I prefer the Rem. 700 and Win. 70 myself. It is fun to try to get a real tight group (for me anyway). You have so many choices out there think it through real hard before purchasing. Shoot 'em first if you have friends that have what you decide you want. It will help you know if it is really right for you, before the money is spent.

+1 on a good bolt action rifle. Savage, Winchester or Remington chambered in .308...you can't go wrong with them. I would say that hunting is typically done with a bolt action rifle anyway...I could be wrong since I am not an experienced hunter.

As far as fun factor, if you already have a semiauto rifle (AK) you will find that the methodology and "shot-by-shot" approach used with a bolt rifle has its own merits and provide you with a great chance to concentrate more on the fundamentals of shooting and learn something new about the different factors that affect shot placement.

Hell, if the wifey is giving you a nice budget up to 8 C notes I would even look at getting 2 rifles...maybe a high speed rimfire rifle to go with your hunting centerfire? just for fun...17HMR anyone?

I love shooting and all aspects of it...I would say that everyone needs to experience a bolt gun AND a semi-auto. Just my 2 cents.
