The SARs are good, reliable rifles, but do occasionally suffer from quality control problems because of the US parts and the sometimes lackadaisical assembly at Century.
Here's a good thread from ak-47.net called "Before you buy that SAR":

I did get a good gun from AIM with respect to the sights and the overall assembly. However, something I couldn't control was the soft hammer (crappy US part). So I wound up spending an extra $100 so that I could put in Romanian internals. Of course, this figure includes having to buy new US-made stocks so that I could meet the parts count and use foreign magazines without having to replace followers, floor plates, etc.
But now the gun looks great with K-Var black synthetic stocks, and the Romanian hammer is properly heat treated and good to go. I've seen some threads on AK-47.net about heat treating the poorly made US hammers. I may try this; if it works, I'll have an extra hammer.
And of course, not all the US hammers are soft. A lot were reported in the 99 models, far fewer in the 2000 models. Mine is a 2001, and who knows? Maybe I just got unlucky.
Even though I had to replace some things, I still recommend the SAR. Reliable and fun to shoot. Get one before they're gone.
