Need suggestions on .22LR handgun

In addition a 1911-type pistol I plan to buy soon, I am also thinking of getting a .22LR. These are fun guns to plink with, and the ammo is dirt cheap. I've done a lot of research on the 1911's, but none on .22's. Does anybody have any suggestions? How about the anniversary edition of the Ruger .22LR? There is one at a gun shop for $216. Is this a good price?

You could get the .22 convertion kit for your 1911 style pistol. Probably find one for around $150 to $175.

You might want to take a look at Hammerli's (Sig) new trailside. Its about $350 and aside from some issues with some of the first models off the line, its supposed to be real good. I was going to get one untill I saw Beretta's 22lr target (89 Gold Standard) and that was all she wrote... :)

That IS a pretty decent price for the anniversary Ruger, but you might take a look at some of Ruger's other .22s, too. They are all basically the same design, just with different extras. For a little more money (or maybe even less)than the Anniv. model, you can get longer, heavier barrels and stainless. I just got a slabside Competition Target model and I love it. The nice thing about MKIIs and 22/45s is that they've been around so long and there are so many out there. Just about any gun/pawn shop has a few used ones for sale and there are all kinds of aftermarket goodies for them. You really can't go wrong with one of these.
You might also check out Browning's Buckmark line, their options and pricing run very similarly to Ruger's. I've heard good things about them, I just picked the Ruger because it looks cooler IMHO :)

My all time favorite and I haven`t been able to find one for years is the S&W 22/32 kit gun. I had one 25 years ago and it was sweet. I guess it depends on what you`d use it for. A revolver will shoot just about anything (pest control comes to mind) while an auto is finicky. I have a Browning which is a quality gun but if I could find that S&W at a good price, I`d grab it. Just my .02.

We've a few various .22LR handguns. Of all. I like the SW 317 adj sights, best. 11oz (can't even tell it's in a holster), 8 shots & plenty accurate.

Greetings, Be sure and check out these two;
1) Ruger MK-II KMK512, and 2) Smith & Wesson's Model 617. I own the Ruger; it has
51/2 bull barrel and adjustable sight's.
Darn good shoot'in iron!!!

Another kudo for the Rugers, take your pick. I also like any S&W revolver.
I have a Colt conversion kit and it works great. The only thing is I doubt you can find one for less than 3 or $400 dollars. There was one at a recent gun show that wasn't as clean as mine, that the asking price was $400.

If you want the same grip angle on your 22 as your soon to be purchased 45, go with the ruger 22/45. I have one and I love it. Reliable, accurate, cheap to shoot and should make you better with the 45.

I bought a S&W 22a in a 5 1/2 barrel. I like it a lot. Paid
179.00 for it.

I love the Browning Buckmark. It is accurate, and reliable with most good ammo. Mine likes cci Blazers the best, which is good because it is pretty cheap. I don't like the method of take down, you need an allen wrench, and you have to keep that top part tight with the screws or you will get light firing pin strikes. But that is only a minor complaint, once I figured out what the problem was I never had any more trouble. They are about $250, I think.

If a 1911 style pistol is in the works,I'd give the edge to the Ruger 22/45. I have seen the 5 1/2" model NIB for 190 + tax at the shop near my home. Picked one up in a trade, great little gun. Me and the boys have put over 3000 round through the pistol since last May with no problems. I'm so pleased with this one I may get another.

Be careful around a man with one gun,he'll know how to use it.

Out of all the .22LR pistols I've fired, only two of them stand out as absolutely great. They are the Ruger MKI or II Target in 6 7/8" heavy tapered barrel, and the High Standard Citation Military Target w/heavy barrel.

You can find the Ruger Target pistols for prices between $175 and $250 depending on condition. The High Standard pistols are going to bite you for around $500.

BTW, I've fired the Ruger MKII standards (similar to the Anniversary model), but they do not compare in accuracy to the Target models. Also, get the longest barrel you can find...make sure you have adjustable rear sights too.

Being a John Moses Browning head, my choice
is the Woodsman or as in my case a Huntsman.
What a sweet, LIGHTWEIGHT auto-loader in .22
rimfire! All the Huntsman needs is an adjustable rear sight. Other than that, It's
perfect! (the trigger and stock angle is JUST right!).

rmf3,

"Illegitimi non Carborundum"

I had that drawn on the back of my jacket when I was involved in the "South-East Asian War Games" back in 66-67. A whole lot of people stopped me and asked what it meant. I really enjoyed tellng them. Especially junior officers.

Well there's Ruger. Then there's Ruger, and if you don't like those you can always look at the Ruger's.
1.) MK II
2.) Bearcat
3.) Single six new model with interchangeable cylinders for 22lr & 22mag.

Cat,
Fun ain't it :).
A friend made a badge for me w/that quote,
It has a cross - eyed deer's head wearing a crown, and one broken antler tied back on.

Cat, I give up...what's it mean?
Also, my vote is for the Rugers, however, that Hammerelli is looking mighty fine!

P.S. if looking for very accurate Rugers, look at Volquartsen's web site.

The Ruger autos are probably THE most fun at the range, but for casual plinking, carrying on a hike or as a small game gun carried in addition to the bigger gun, I like the S&W K frame revolvers, especially the four inch Model 18 and the six inch K-22 (Model 17). My latest favorite, which I absolutely love, is a Walther PP in .22 which I found on consignment. I'm saving up for a custom holster and it will be my main woods gun.

I have to vote for the MKII also. I've had one for years. The SW 41 is nice also but over double the cost.
