Need suggestions for a concealed carry gun

I am getting my CHL soon and want a compact pistol to carry. I have pretty much narrowed it down to an HK USP compact in .40 or .45 or a Glock 36 in .45. I already have a Glock 27 and like it a lot, but my wife wants it as her gun. I am 99% sure I will get the Glock or the HK. There are lots of other good gun makers out there such as Sig, but they just don't feel as comfortable to me.

Can anyone give me pros/cons of the HK vs Glock as far as accuracy, reliability, etc go? What about the .40 vs .45?

Have you tried the Sig P239 ? I've got one in .40 . It is an exellent carry gun. Comes in 9mm.,.357SIG and .40. It holds 8 rounds .
For a picture of it , look to auctionarms. on the web.

I have been carrying a concealed gun for 27 yrs. I found out that if the gun is too big, you won't carry it. It will stay in your car or at home. And it does no good there. Find a gun that is small and that you will carry. A .22 Derringer on your person is better than a .44 mag in your car under the seat (when you're away from the car, of course). I carry the Kahr MK40. Good power and is VERY concealable. And I carry it everywhere.

Go for reliability before accuracy. at close personal defense situations accuracy won't matter.

Good luck.

My carry gun is the Glock 26. It conceals well, and is comfortable. However if you are a boulder spitting power freak ;) ,the G36 is not a bad way to go, except I personally would get the G30 for the added capacity. If and when I ever get a .45, it will be the G30. :) I also hear that the G30's are way accurate. I do not approve of the .40 Slick & Willy for political reasons, but that's just me.

The 40 S&W is no more about Smith & Wesson than the 44 mag. Remington is about Remington or the 300 mag. Weatherby is about Weatherby.

If you like the Glock and it works for you then you should probably own two. Of the Glocks (which I don't like) the 30 works best for me. But I HATE the Glock trigger.

Never had a J-frame snubby in .357 jam on me. And they're easy to carry.

Of the two pistols you mentioned, accuracy, reliability, and durability are too close to call IMHO. Which type operating system do you prefer?

On .40 vs. .45, hey, bigger is better. But the actual difference here is probably pretty close too. You won't go wrong with either pistol.

why not consider a Glock 30. its not that much wider than the 36 but holds more rounds and has lighter recoil. HK USP-C's seem to be pretty bulky guns. it looks like my Glock 19 would be easier to conceal then one of them especially the .45. also you could just get another Glock 27 if u like it a lot.

i find the Glock 30 to be an increadibly accurate and controlable gun for its size. it recoils as much as a hot 9mm with some loads. HK's and Glocks are both very reliable guns but i'd give the nod to glocks. they will work in situations where HK's may not. if i carried i would carry a 9mm so i feel you would be well armed with either a .40 or .45. .40s tend to be easier to conceal since they are usually slimmer guns unless your comparing it to a single stack .45. if you can conceal an HK USP-C .45 you can conceal a Glock 30 or Glock 19/23/32 easily.

I suggest you do a little research on nearby ranges where you can rent and shoot various handguns. Even if the specific model you are interested in isn't available at the range, you can at least rent a similar model by the same maker to check out the features, trigger feel and general handling.

Also, I suggest you should make some room in your budget for a visit to a good gunsmith for at least a trigger job. Current semi-auto pistols are being delivered with heavy trigger pulls. Some (Colt Oficers Model and Para P12 for example) have other problems that should be remedied for weapon reliablity.

My only concealed carry is at the range. So, you have that up front.

I have three guns that qualify as concealed carry. I have a Kahr K9, Glock 33 and H&K P7M8. The Kahr and the P7 are thinner and more agreeable to concealment. The 33 is more of a MAN stopper. The outstanding features that make me suggest the P7M8 as well worth a look are as follows: Always shoots. A very safe gun with the "grip cocking" safety system. Accuracy matched only by my revolvers. Very fast to first and follow-up shots. Unlikely problem should BG take your gun. Chances are slim to nill that they will figure out how to make this one go bang before you have a chance to do "x"..plan "B". I purchased the Kahr for my girlfriend and have been very 9mm unfriendly, but shooting the P7 has changed my mind. I still am not crazy about the 9mm, but boy can I shoot that gun. My Glock 21 comes in second. It is also very dependable. The P7 is a dirty gun. It gets hot when you fire 50 rounds in a row. It has a limited magazine capacity, but it can really shoot unlike any semi-automatic that I have used. I think that it is a great gun for concealed carry.

Go to the range, try out the Glock 30, 27, and 36. Figure out which one you are most comfortable shooting and conceals easily for you. If I were allowed to conceal, I would go with the 27 with a pinky extension. Good luck.

p.s. If you go with the HK I suggest you go with the advice of the post above me. The P7 is a great gun.

ARshooter is absolutely right! The best concealed handgun is the one you will consistently pick up and carry. I have a lot of handguns, all of which I love dearly, but I actually carry only two. Both because of comfort and ease of carry. One is a Glock 26 and the other is a S & W 442 Featherlite. I agree that the smaller guns are the one most likely to be picked up and carried.

Thanks for all the advice. I agree that I need a small gun that will be easy to carry. I like the way my Glock 27 shoots. I have considered buying a second one, but when you only own 4 guns, you don't want two of them to be the same. I have an HK 40 USP full size and I like it a lot, but it is two big to carry. That is why I was considering the compact model.

I will look into the Glock 30. It sounds like it might be something I would like. i have always wanted a .45, but having the wifes gun and mine use the same ammo (.40) would be a plus.

If you want a gun that you will carry and not leave at home in the dresser drawer. Consider a Kel-Tec P-32, it is small, light (6.6 ounces) and very flat, that it can be carried very unobtrusively. It holds 8 rounds of .32acp and is very reliable. they are hard to get and most gun shops require that you get on a list to buy one, they are that popular. I have many pocket pistols but these days the P-32 is the one that gets carried. Hell you can even conceal it in a bathing suit, its that concealable. The first rule of a gun fight is to have a gun. With the P-32, you will have it with you.

I'd stay with the Glock 27. Your already familar with it. Now if you want a .45 look at the new Glock 35? not sure of the right model number. I just looked at one of them and they are nice ;)
Just my thoughts,For what they are worth :)
Happy Shooting :)

I helped a friend pick out a new CCW a few months ago and he ended up with a USP compact in .40. We were both suprised to see that when you compared it side by side to his *&* 640-1 snubbie revolver that they were the same size and the H&K was lighter(empty anyway)! Point being they`re smaller than the look. He`s very happy with it. Both the USP C and Glock 36/30 are fine carry guns. Personally I`d go for either the USP or 30. Since the 30 is cheaper and a .45 I`d probably opt for the 30,and I don`t even like Glocks. The 30 is wearing my resistance down though. :D Marcus
