A buddy of mine is wanting to go hunting this year and dosent have any guns yet. I offered to loan him a rifle for when we go but he wants a shotgun of his own. When he was a kid his grandpa took him deer hunting with a pump shotgun firing slugs. So I am looking for some good suggestions in case I overlooked something. Wants a 12 guage pump prefferabely with a rifled barrel. Also he is short so size DOES matter he cant be lugging a 59"barreled gun through the woods.;) And he is on a tight $$buget. Thanks for any suggestions.

Mossberg makes a 500 combo set with a 28" vent rib barrel and a 24" fully rifled deer barrel for less than most bolt action rifles.

I have to agree, if your buddy has a limited budget, the Mossberg is the cheapest. I prefer a Remington 870 and/or an Ithaca Deerslayer ll or lll

I agree mossberg is the way to go.

An alternative might be a H&R Ultra Slugger, or just an H&R/NEF slug gun.

Yep, Mossberg 500 is the way to go

My Ithaca SxS doubles are nice, but pricey. The Mossberg is a good bet. Check out the Remington 870 as well.

JC higgins (sears)

Uded JC Higgins model120 for $100
Barrels interchangable with Winchester 1200 & 1300 when one has more money. Great guns, and parts are readily availiable any decent gun show, swap meet or gun auction.

You would be better off with a good used Browning BPS or Remington 870. They'll both be guns he can sell down the road - if he wants.

The mossberg is really a "throw away" kind of like the Remington express - there just isn't much there long term. But if it fits his budget for now - that's not a bad thing either.

What is he hunting? What kind of terrain? He may want a slug gun for nastalgia, but is it a practical weapon for his purpose?

Oh, Big Jim, you should know that both of those guns are darn good shotguns and they will last and last and last. :) They are anything but "throw aways". :)
