Need some info on Federal Deer Thugs 30-30

I picked up a couple boxes of this load in 170 gr to sight in my Marlin 336. I have it tuned in nicely at 100 yards. I put a few rounds of Hornady Leverevolution 160 gr. This load was punching the paper about 3 inches high at 100 yards. I have a few questions to address.

1. Does anyone have any first hand experience with the 170 gr Deer Thugs on deer and how does it perform?

2. I know a lot of people sight a 30-30 3 inches high at 100 yards for a zero at 200. Where would the Hornadys impact at 50 yards?

Where would the Hornadys impact at 50 yards?

Hornady has a full ballistic chart on their website.

As for the Deer Thugs ammo, I've never used it but it's very similar to "Blue-box" federal. It's specially made for Walmart only. That alone turns me against it, but it's probably as good as most other ammo in its price range. If you can find it, Give Hornady's LeverEvolution a try.

I have read it is the same as the Fusion loads, only different powder. As far as the Hornady goes, I need to know the answer to the specific question I asked. Hornady's data does not show a trajectory chart showing impact at 50 yards with 3 inches high at 100.

trust me if you put one of those hornadys anywhere in the ribcage area of a whitetail it will be in a heap when the gun comes out of recoil.it doesnt matter it its 1 inch high 3inches high or two low.if it hits the ribcage you will be pulling venison out of the woods.good luck, and have fun.

Deer thugs is good ammo. I have shot it in my .243 win. and it is 3/4 MOA ammo. Shot a few deer with it and the bullets did their job. I recovered 1 and 2 exited. Its the Speer Deep curl, not the fusion.

Its the Speer Deep curl, not the fusion.

Reynolds, isn't the DeepCurl a flat-base version of the boat-tailed Fusion bullet?

IIRC they both claim to be "electro-mechanically bonded".

I didn't realize DeepCurls were the bullets used in the Deer Thugs ammo. That's actually a great bullet. I figured they were Hot-Cor's or something.

I dont know Steve, but the bullet weights in the deer thugs ammo align with the weights of the deep curl and differ from the weights of the fusion. When they first came out, I thought they were Fusions as well. I then began to notice that most of the weights were different. I looked at Deep Curls, and the weights lined up.
