I'm thinking about buying one, rather than an AR15, because I like the looks and the caliber better. Before I purchase one though, what should I look for and what should I try to avoid? Also, if anyone has a rough estimate on how much, that would be great. I have heard that Im better off purchasing an AR-15, am I foolish for wanting an FAL?

goto FALFILES, do not pass Go, Go directly to FALFILES

Also. make sure you get an IMBEL or DSA receivered weapon.

Imbel makes the best widely available imported receivers, by all accounts, and DSA makes an excellent domestic receiver. This is just paraphrazing what everyone here has said...but also what is generally believed on the falfiles as well. My personal experience with the FAL is almost zero...so far ;)

PS The other commonly held belief is avoid Hesse receivers, unless you are in need of a paperweight

"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects." -Robert Heinlein

Why IMBEL or DSA

IMBEL is made in Brazil under an FN contract. DSA is made right here in the USA they use old Steyr STG58 blueprints on new CNC milling machines. Steyr was an FN contract (Austrian).

The ONLY other receiver I would go with would be an Argentinian FMAP Rosario receiver. These are a little trickier to find. Once agin made under an FN contract.

Hesse receivers (USA mfct) simply put SUCK. Their QC sucks and they look like mad beavers cut em out. Sorry Hesse owners.

Enterprise (USA mfct) is getting better at making receivers but they still do not make a perfectly mil spec receiver.
