I just recently received a Winchester model 70 in .270, the stock is not in good shape. I want to re-do it but how do I sand off the old yuk without damaging the original checkering?
Dont sand it. Get some paint remover and let it soak for a bit and it will fall/scrape off. Use one of the toothbrush type cleaning brush to get it out of checkering. You may have to final sand with a fine grit paper but dont remove any wood if you can help.May have to do it a time or two but it will come clean. I use the Formby's brand.
If you can provide a photo or two, we can tell you better what to do. Does it have any scratches, dings, cracks, or missing wood? If it is just the finish itself, then you can remove it with a remover.
