Need some guidance on 7.62x54R

Mosin-Marauder

New member
I really enjoy shooting my Mosin and I would like to have a good supply of ammo. I saw online a site was selling 440 Rd Spam Cans for 99 bucks or 22 cents a piece. Is this legit? I am in the process of getting a Job to fund my shooting and I was wondering if this is reliable. I just don't wanna spend 99 bucks and not get anything in the mail. Anyway, thanks in advance.
P.S. here's the website: http://www.aimsurplus.com/product.aspx?item=A76254R

Buying that caliber, in those spam cans for that price is the norm. That website also has a good reputation purchase away!

That I don't know... I don't have any guns that are chambered in calibers that I would've been purchasing spam cans.

Okay, thanks so much for your help. Also, about opening an individualncan, would a kitchen can opener work?

Unfortunately, no. You'll need either the spam can opener that usually only comes with a full case of ammo or a hammer and chisel. Most people chisel them open and do fine. You DO need to remember there is live ammo inside so some care needs to be exercised. Southern Ohio Gun is another source you might check as their shipping is often better than Aim. Sportsmans Guide also has it cheap and with a coupon can beat most others.

Yeah the can opener usually comes with the 880 round crate, which has two 440 round cans inside.

It is very handy for opening the cans, but there are other ways if you don't get an opener.

I have found that a Soviet blade type bayonet is the easiest way to open the spam cans. In use, sort of like a really big P38. Those can openers which come in the wooden case hurt my hands unless I wrap them first with a washcloth or something.

I've seen guys on youtube use a die grinder or the like, which, with a shower of sparks, opens up the cans. Personally, even though I know it *shouldn't* ignite the cartridges, all those sparks make me nervous near live ammo.

Buy with confidence from Aim Surplus. Good people. I've bought much ammo from them. Another good place is www.sportsmansguide.com . At least I have purchased from them with reliable performance over the years.

While its still cheap (and it used to be cheaper) getting the surplus combloc ammo is fine. Just be aware that it might not shoot as accurately as one could wish.

And, its not reloadable.

Also, you must assume that the surplus ammo in this caliber is corrosive. This means that the priming compound of each round leaves behind salts which absorb moisture from the air, and corrode the steel, if not removed. And conventional cleaning does not remove them. Water does.

There are several threads where the right process is discussed, search for them, and enjoy your 7.62x54R!

it will be corrosive and with a soft steel core, accuracy will be about 5inch on 100yards
you must clean your rifle in the same day you shoot it, the primers are the corrosive part, alot of people just use water since its the salts that are corrosive and easily dissolved, there is a ton of info online about how to clean afterwards

i have several cans, the opener by the way is easy to use and should be had for under 3$

99$ dollars is a great price, but after shipping+handling fees, you may be better off buying local or off armslist, you can usually find in stores for about 100$-129$

that's about average price for that stuff. it's corrosive you will want to clean your gun after each use. you don't have to go the crazy route that the interweb would have you believe and clean it out with windex and hot water while spinning it in a centrifuge and rubbing your tummy and patting your head while doing hail maries. just clean it out with CLP or other cleaning compounds and oil when you're done and you'll be fine.

Pretty much everything has been covered above but I would like to offer this.
This ammo is still cheap but will not stay that way.
My advice is buy is cheap and stack it deep because sooner more than later this surplus will be more expensive and will dry up at some point.

No spam cans

To me spam cans are a waste of money. There is no such thing as cheep shooting. I would rather pay for boxer primed ammo so I can reload it later.

The spam can can be a chore to open so don't cut yer arm off matey! Aim Surplus is AAAA+ dealer in firearms and related items with excellent CS.
