well, this is my first post on this forum and I need some advice. Google search has led me here, and the thread by shooter john from 2009 regarding his custom 30-06 has got me hooked!

I want to build my own precision hunting rifle in 260 rem. and need some advice. since I do not have a lathe, I figure I am limited to the Savage action. That being said, where would you guys start.

Here is what I know:

caliber: 260 rem
budget: $1000 (not including scope and any other accessories including toosl needed to build)
Application: precision long range hunting/shooting
bullet weight: probably in the 129-140 range
bullet type: kinda in the air right now, will take suggestions??

Here is what I need help with:

type of savage action:

Barrel:

trigger:

stock:

and, where is the best place to buy?

thanks guys!!

Welcome aboar Jimsbriar! My advice/opinions/help may be wayshort of expert, but here's my $.02. And it's kinda close to what I'm currently doing.

I don't know the area you're in, but you're not stuck with only a Savage- I would look at anything from Remington 700 or Savage that's aready chambered in .308. That'll tell ya it's a medium length receiver.

Buy used- in fact, if it's pretty much all used up- that's OK too. You'll only be wanting the receiver and bolt (those never wear out unless they've been given a dremmel treatment by a shadetree smith). Contact an outfit like Hart: http://www.hartbarrels.com/rebarrelingprices.php The reason I mention Hart, is, well, look at what they off you for your $$. They'll true the action, provide the bbl, install, and headspace. For the whole she-bang from folks who do bbls for a living- that sounds like an OK way for a guy to get the length, contour, twist he wants in a custom rifle.

Later on, and this'll be the part to push you over your $1000 budget, you can go with the stock you want, trigger upgrade, etc. But for the cost of a used rifle, bbl, and installation- that may be the way to go.

Hope that helps a bit.

I'm working on a similar project but I'm going with 243AI.

With 260 (I'm guessing) if you go with short action you might be restricted as to bullets or OAL that will fit the magazine. Check into that.

The cheapest option is to buy a used gun. Next cheapest is probably to buy a cheap, new savage and rebarrel it. That's what I'm doing. I have a Savage 11.

After reading and reading and asking and asking, I have decided on a barrel from McGowen. There are many other companies, Pac-Nor, Douglas, Bar-Sto maybe. My research convinced me to buy McGowen.

For a trigger, I'm sticking with the Savage because it's a deer gun, primarily, and I don't want or need anything lighter. I may buy a spring to lower it a little. Anyway, if I were buying a trigger for varmints or bench, I'd most likely go Jard (which I have on my Ruger M77) or possibly Timney.

I haven't decided on a stock yet. If it were a bench gun I'd be going Choate but they're too heavy for a woods gun.

Scope, Sightron Big Sky SII.

Rings, Burris Signature.
