Need some advice.....

To all you advanced pistoleros out there, I need some pointers.

I have been shooting Bullseye competition for a good time now. I still am in need of a good wadcutter gun.

As a temporary measure, I purchased a SW 625, and put my Ultra-Dot on it. I found that this revolver is VERY accurate at 50 yards. As long as I remember the fundamentals, the 10 or better is almost a guarantee.

Now to the hard part.

Do you all have any pointers for shooting timed and rapid fire? What this entails is 5 round strings at 25 yards, in 20 seconds for timed fire, and 10 seconds for rapid fire. It looks like I am going to have to shoot double action.

So, what do I need to practice to maintain a good, tight shot group at 25 yards?

Powderman,

I use a similar set up.

This target was NOT shot rapid fire. (I wish!!)

Best advice I can give is to get the book " HOW TO BECOME A MASTER HANDGUNNER, The Mechanics of X-Count Shooting", by Charles Stephens. While not specifically directed at Bullseye, it is the best $14 you'll ever spend.

Disadvantage to the 625/UltraDot set up is the weight. 3 pounds is a lot to hold steady with one hand. Advantage is the weight kills almost all the recoil.

Try to work on not stopping the double action trigger pull once you start. Just get the dot close, start the pull, and depend on your hand/eye coordination to make the last second mico sight adjustments to get the dot on the X ring. Don't steady the dot on the X-ring 1st, and then start your trigger pull. #1, the dot probably won't still be there, when the shot breaks, and #2, you'll be too slow in rapid fire.

Works for me. Good Luck...

Powderman,
I use a S&W #52, but I have seen a S&W model 1955 shot in National Match using the weak hand to cock each time. That way your grip is maintained but you DO have to alter your stance. Quantrill

Powderman, no need to shoot double action when shooting 5 shots in 10 seconds. Try it. Count off while shooting. You will realize that is plenty of time to get off 5 accurate and controlled single action shots.

DX with left thumb cocking

As a Deputy Marshal, Rangemaster, Police Weapons Instructor and lifetime DX competitor I developed the habit when wishing to shoot very accurately in fast mode I used the standard police two handed grip and cocked with my left thumb. I shot DX on the police range with my 2 inch model 60 with three bulls up and shocked Rangemaster gun writer Ted Lane doing that.
