Need some advice on Primers

I’m not (completely) new to reloading but I’m sure most people here are much more experienced than I am. My question is about the Primers that I’ll be shooting in my new .308 Weatherby reloads. The other elements I’ll be reloading with are Hornady BL-C (2) Powder (I think this will be a good Starting Point), Nosler Custom Brass, and Nosler 165 gr. Ballistic Tip Bullets. I’ve tried very hard to find on-line and off Federal 210M Primers everywhere, of course, to no avail. I was hoping that someone here may be reloading a similar caliber/load and could tell me what might be (again a good starting point) Primer that they have had success with. Of course, it has to be something that I can purchase now and not have to wait months for my backorder to (hopefully) come in.

I’ll be hunting (Deer, Boar, etc.) not shooting matches, but I still always want the most accurate load possible (for my ability level) like all of us. When I got the scope sighted in I was shooting sub MOA (at 100 yards) with Nosler Trophy Grade Factory Ammo. Obviously, I want to reload my own ammo and want the best combination for my rife. Thank you for any suggestions you might have on a Primer that may be the closest to the 210 M in performance that I can purchase.

CCI reformulated their magnum primers in 1989 specifically to better ignite the hard-to-ignite, high surface deterrent spherical powder family that BL-C(2) is part of, the Western Canon military rifle powder series from St. Marks. I strongly recommend you use that primer (CCI 250) or the Federal 215M primer with you powder choice. You will get lower velocity standard deviation and it will ignite the powder better in cold conditions where it has a reputation for being difficult and harder to make behave than the stick powders are.

+ I don't have specific advice and I think your question is already answered
but:

* I am in favor of primers
* Nice to see another hill country resident on the forum!

What you can do is get the primers that you are able to get and test your round and make adjustment from there.I use win. in 308 and other rifles it works for me.I use the stanard ones not the mag.

Poor choice of powder in my opinion

I think you have 300 Weatherby and BL-C (2) which is a Hodgdon ball powder which is too fast for a cartridge like the 300 Weatherby. Maybe just maybe I would use that powder with a 110 gr projectile. I don't have any clue where you came up with that combination, marginal powder at best unless I have totally misread what you want to do.. William

I'm reading it as a Weatherby rifle chambered in 308, not a 300 Wby mag rifle. Maybe he'll clear it up.

The CCI primers may be ideal, but aren't the only thing that will work, even with ball powder. That is what I used when I started loading. In recent years Winchester LR primers have been easier for me to locate, they are reputed to burn as hot as most magnum primers. I tried some and can't tell any difference in my loads so that is what I'm well stocked with. I used to save the magnum primers for the 300 WSM, but when I got low experimented with the Winchester LR primers and even in the magnum case I got the same speeds and accuracy.

If you can find CCI's they will certainly work, but if not don't be afraid to try something else.

ANY large magnum rifle primer will work. The most you "might" have to do, switching from one primer to another, is drop the charge weight by 2% and re-work the load--and that is not very common.
Powder Valley has Winchester LRM primers. They always worked well for me.
Next, I have never needed a LRM primer for BL-C(2)--and certainly not for a .308.

BLC-2(it's an old .308 go-to powder) doesn't require magnum primers regardless of the cartridge it's used in. If you can't find Federal primers, use whatever you can find. Yes, Hodgdon shows Federal 210M on their site, but it's not terribly important. You're not using the same components or the same rifle/universal receiver they did and the difference in velocities will not matter.
Work up the load using the No$ler bullet and a regular large rifle primer and you'll be fine.

Thank you so much..

I wanted to thank all of you for all of the information and help you've given me about my Primer question. You guys/girls have been more than kind. This will, certainly, be my go-to Forum for reloading, etc.

I'm a 308 benchrest shooter, I use CCI 200 & Fed. match 210m primers, no difference on paper, CCI primers are alittle harder, with a bolt action any Large rifle primers would be fine, never had a problem. Uniform your primer pockets to seat at the same depth, clean your flash hole with a #45 drill bit in preping your cases, you will be fine. Powder, my rifle likes IMR 4064. I don't load to the Max. Highest load with a 168 gr. bullet was 42.0 gr. Accuracy is 40.5 - 41.5 For hunting I would stay with 2.800 OAL for easy chambering. Hope I helped in some way. Be safe Chris
