need 'Smith in LA!

I purchased a new Rem 700 CDL in .30-06 last year w/ a new Leupold fixed power scope. The gun store that sold me the rifle and scope mounted the scope on the rifle, but that is the extent of their "service" capabilities. Basically, they are a sales only store, they might be able to help hook you up with your manufacturer if you need warranty service, but the store itself has NO repair / service capabilities.

Can anyone out there recommend a good gunsmith in the Burbank / Los Angelels area? I'm not looking for warranty service on either the Remington or Leupold products; I'm looking for someone who can confirm my suspicion that the store did a lame job of mounting the scope and then re-do the job correctly. This is my first rifle (and scope...) so I don't have years of experience to guide me. My suspicions are based on two facts: 1) the installation looks half-assed (asymetrical base positioning, uneven gaps between the ring halves, the whole scope appears tilted about 1 or 2 degrees, etc.); and 2) although I have zeroed the rifle/scope at least 3 or 4 times, my target shooting performance remains very inconsistent. (a pair of 7/8" groups at 200yds followed by a day where I didn't get one group under 3" at 100yds.

I don't need a gunsmith that works in a big retail gun shop. I'll be happy to take it to somebody who works out of his garage or basement. Just somebody who knows what they're doing. Please......

Thanks.

700 scope problems

Dear Sir:
You can do this yourself!
First: Relax, it's not brain surgery!
Second: Remove the ring clamps that hold the scope itself on rifle (top halves.)
Remove scope.
Remove rings from bases on the rifle.
If the base on the reciever is a two piece affair make sure they are the right bases (use computer info) and make sure the screws are tight.
If a one piece base make sure the screws are tight. If it's a one piece base you will, at the rear, remove the right rear horizontal ring holding screw and slide the rear ring off the gun.
After checking screws then put the rear base (if a one piece base) on rifle with rear screws just finger tite.
Re-mount the scope correcting the crosshairs by rotating scope.
Remove bolt and while looking through bore see if the light in the rear lens is in the center of the scope lens. If not gently twist front ring (loosten rear screws) till the "exit pupil" is centered and look generally to see it scope aligns with bbl. reciever. If everything checks out straight hand tighten the two rear screws and then alternately tighten them securely! (one piece twist in rings)
If two piece bases just check screws and re-mount scope.
Hope this helps and won't confuse you.

um... thanks. but I'd still like the contact info for a 'smith in the LA area, even if the scope problem fixed itself. Any suggestions?

Bill at King's Gunworks in Glendale can reinstall the scope mount & rings. It will cost you some $s and a couple/several weeks wait though. He is good and has a healthy backlog of work.
