Need SKS Info Quick

Today I was in a pawn shop and found what looks to be a Chinese paratrooper model with a gray parkerized type finish, a green molded plastic stock with a molded high capacity removable magazine. It looks almost new and can be bought for $179.00. I would be interested in any information anyone can give me about this SKS as I am seriously thinking about buying it. I looked at one at the last gun show I attended and the dealer wanted $250 for it. However, I think that one took AK type steel high capacity mags. I will be going to a gun show this weekend and have to decide whether to save enough money to buy this SKS or something else at the gun show.

I don't know anything about the gun you mention, but I personally prefer a SKS that will accept the high capacity AK mags so that they will interchange with my AK47. Makes it easier for me to keep up with things and don't have to worry about picking up the wrong mag on the way out the door.

By Paratrooper, do you mean because it has a 16" barrel? Or, are you referring to the fact that it had a detachable mag?

All of the standard, box mag, SKSs can be fit with one of those extended plastic types. Their reputation for problems, though, is well known. If the rifle is in overall nice shape, that is not too bad of a price. But, you'll then have to find a stock 10-rd. box mag to install in it for reliability.

If you intend to use it mostly for rapid-fire fun, then maybe the ones that are built for AK mags would be the better choice. If you want it for hunting, and general use, then the standard mag version is the better choice. Five round 'hunter' conversions are readily available. The bolt does not lock open on an empty mag with the AK mags, and really, you can't swap a mag much faster than you can pop in a fresh 10rd clip. However, you can do a 'tactical' reload by mag swapping, which can't be accomplished with the fixed box.

That would be one of the K-sports models. These SKS's were entirely parkerized, and were equipped with a green synthetic stock. Standard and Paratrooper models were made. I think the ban on importing assault weapons put K-sports out of business. I have one of the Paratrooper models, and it originally comes with a matching parkerized fixed 10 round magazine.

The SKS in question has a solid green stock, short barrel and a hi-capacity plastic detachable magazine. I don't know what model it is, but it looks new. I guess I will go back to the pawn shop tomorrow and take another look at it. If I can't find anything wrong with it I will probably buy it and take it with me to the gun show. Maybe someone there can identify it. I'll see what kind of trade in value it has. At $179.00 I don't think that I can go wrong with it. I already have a very nice Norico SKS with a 4x scope. I am planning to add several more SKSs to my battery to lend to friends and relatives if needed. I'll you know what I find out.
