need shotgun advice

hello all,
I'm more of a rifle/pistol kind of guy but I'm thinking about taking up bird hunting and maybe clay pigeon shooting so I was wondering what a good hunting shotgun is?

I prefer the capacity of a pump gun or semi over an O/U or side by side.
safety location really isn't an issue though the switch on the remington 870 trigger guard to allow cycling is annoying.
I prefer 12 gauge.
I'm trying to keep price low, $500 is about the highest I want to spend.

ever think of a mossy? the legandary mossberg 500 brand new is like less then $300 around here an i love mine. i got mine a '11 model at a gun shop used for $150

I was thinking about a mossberg 500 but I was under the impression that it was more of a self defense shotgun than a hunting shotgun

naw its factory like a 26" or 28" barrel. yes you can convert an put a 20" barrel with a longer magazine tube on it like this-http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=25124/Product/MOSSBERG_500_HIGH_CAPACITY_SHOTGUN_KIT
but i use mine from squirrel huntin to blastin deer

if that is so the army would be using remington instead of the mossy's :) they can be converted to so many ways from self defence to hunting.

The government buys stuff using low bid. Try them both. Look at a Remington Wingmaster. Mossbergs compare to Express models. Mark

Suggested retail price of the civil version is around $1800 for the US market according to Benelli US website. No NFA stamp is required to purchase or own one. Standard magazine capacity of the civil version is 4+1, although LE models are available to private individuals on the secondary market.

Government writes the specs, companies try and build a product that meets the specs, and costs less than another company doing the same thing. Government buys the product that meets the specs at the lowest cost. Besides, military got tired of dealing with rusty guns. :) customaquatics seems to have a love/hate relationship with his Mossberg. http://thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=465098

now is the 500 able to take anything bigger than the usual 2 1/4" shells or can it take longer shells as well? also what is the cap with the tube extension?

"Mossberg claims the Model 500 is the only shotgun to pass the US Army's Mil-Spec 3443E test, "a brutal and unforgiving torture test with 3,000 rounds of full power 12 gauge buckshot".

I bought a used browning bps from the local gun shop for under 300 after taxes.
This gun is amazing, I have never had any problems with it and I have put over 2000 shells through it and its fired each one.

It is very easy to take apart and put back together, but that might be because I do it after almost every use.
If you can find a nice looking one locally, I highly recommend it. Nothin but good has come from it.

My dad owns a mossy and he likes his very much also. I have shot it several times and it feels pretty good.
However, I do know it sometimes has problems chamberin winchester super X 2 3/4"

ya i hope mine doesnt have that problem i run remington loads threw mine but bought the super X loads since walmart has there thing going 100 rounds of like 8 shot super X for $20 i got a box but havent shot any yet.

? thats like a forum that if you sign up you can change what wikky says. its not a 100% definate truth. an if mossberg is right when they say they are the only shotgun to blow threw 3k rounds of buckshot an yes they are cheaper then benelli why aren't they still using them?

From what i remember, the super X were too short to chamber properly.
The local walmart around here also had the same deal, 100 rounds of federal target loads for 20 bucks, might wanna keep an eye out for those.

um...why are we arguing milspecs? military shotguns are not designed for hunting, they are designed for very close range combat. I am not impressed by any milspec gun out there. I've shot the M9, I have no inclination to buy a beretta 92. I've shot the M16 and M4, I have no inclination to go out and buy an FN herstal or colt AR15. the only reason I've considered the m500 is because I haven't had to qual with one yet. I also dont really care about guns that are being considered for service, benelli are way to rich for my blood and I really dont care about an HK416/HK556, all I want is a hunting shotgun
