Need S&W Model 60 opinons

At a gunshow this past weekend, I was looking at S&W model 60's for carry/personal defense. Fit my hand really nicely. The 2-inch barrel seems a bit better balanced, but I'm sure that better accuracy can be had with the 3-inch. Opinions?

I've got the old model with the 2" barrel in 38 special. It's very nice to carry and pleasant to shoot - a lot more accurate than it deserves to be!

I don't know that the difference between the 2" or 3" would mean much either way (unless you want to shoot magnums, then the 3" gets the nod). I would go for the one that felt the best to me.

I had a model 60 in 357 with the 2"bbl. Kicked like a mule! Since I own 44Mags, 10MM's, 45-70's I am not a recoil sensitive person but the model 60 roared. It does feel great in your hand though but I ended up putting 38's into it for actual use, so I probably would have gotten the 38 in retrospect. Traded it for a Glock 30. Good solid gun, length of the barrel probably not that important.

I've got one in .357 and the only thing I'd add towhat Legion3 said is that I find it pretty tractable with 110 gr magnums. The 125's and up are not fun to shoot in any quantity. I find 125 gr. .38+P Nyclads are a good compromise. M2

I've got a Model 60 in .357 that is my second favorite gun (Kimber Stainless Compact #1). I love it.

I take issue with "it kicks like a mule." It's very comfortable with .38 Spcl. And, it can be comfortable with .357, providing your shooting the right loads. I shoot 110 grain Winchester semi-JHP out of it. You know your not in Kansas anymore but it's not painful or uncontrollable or unpleasant.

I've got a model 60 in .357. It's a great gun. Fits the hand very well. It can kick pretty hard with the right loads. I shot some Speer Gold Dot 158 gr. .357 and that was an eye opener! I'm planning on trying some 110's or 125's with it soon. With practice loads it was fine, haven't even tried .38's yet. More accurate than I expected too. Great shooter.

Hi, Dr. J.,

I'll vote for the 3". For most methods of carry, the extra inch won't matter a bit and the longer sight radius makes it better for moderately long range (25 yards). FWIW, I have put all 5 in a foot at 100 yards, firing double action with a 3", two hand hold. I recommend avoiding hot loads for reasons already mentioned. Practice with .38 wadcutter first, then practice with the carry load.

Well...

I sincerely doubt that you will ever be able to notice any difference in apparent accuracy.

It's a light-weight, short barreled revolver.

Either one is an excellent choice.

I would be a little more inclined to go with the 3" version, though, as you get just a little more boost to the projectile from the longer barrel. Every little bit helps when you're talking about the .38 Spl.

I have two of the 3 inch versions. As far as recoil goes they are really not that bad. If you want a trail gun they can't be beat. If you are buying one for concealed carry I prefer a revolver with a concealed hammer like the 642. If you need it in a hurry you can bet that hammer on the model 60 will hang up somewhere.
