I shot my first 1000 yards a couple of weeks ago. I shot my 1952 Win Model 70 in 270. It did very well but it is much to nice to be on the ground in prone shooting.

I'm not looking to spend a bunch of money. I'm not looking to win events. I want to beat my buddy and have fun. I own him at 300 yards but he has some pretty fancy stuff.

I saw a Remington 700 SPS Varmint in 308 with a 26" Heavy Contour barrel on Bud's for around $560.00 or so.

What do you think? Thanks.

That would work. But, if your 270 shoots that well, why not try some Berger 150 .277 bullets, They should work well out of your Model 70.

The problem you have would be the barrel, if its a thin hunting type barrel you'll only be good for 4-6 rounds before it gets to walking too much.

If you are going to shoot 20 rounds like a match, then yes the heavier barrel will work.

With the 308 at 100 you're gonna have to go to the 175 Grn match bullets, 168s wont work. Some people have luck with the 155s, but I'm not one of them.

Thanks kraigwy. What do you think of the 7mm Rem Mag. I've been looking at the ballistics on the 308 and it looks like it is getting pretty slow out to 1000. But, I know that a lot of matches are shot with it so I guess it is a good caliber.

They make some dern good match 7 MM bullets that would work just fine.

But

Don't sell the 308 short, my best 1000 yard scores were fired using a 308 in my M1A Super Match.

I've got a Remington 700P LTR in 308 that I'd sell to you. This is the 20 inch fluted barrel model. It's a tack driver...has a Leupold 4.5-14x50 Mark IV scope with Badger mounts and rings. It's an awesome set up...I just don't have time to shoot it. I can send pix if you want me to...let me know by PM.

WINCHESTER

Just keep beating him with your old, obsolete Winchester. When he says, "D**n, your good with that old rifle!", just smile and say, "Yeah, it likes me.". ;)

Hello, brotus2..I'm a little confused about your concern for that nice rifle being fired prone? Are you using a quality prone type mat?
I have started teaching myself prone shooting..after many years of procrastination..I'm using a .22 BSA 12/15 with a custom English walnut stock and a heavy 1" at muzzle 30" long barrel made by the master, H.M. Pope himself in 1933.
I have always been facinated with the old time 1000yd. matches held at Creedmoor, Wimbledon, and Seagirt in the 1870's and 80's.
I have an older book with dimensioned drawings of these original chilled cast-iron targets.
I have scaled these down for shooting at 100yds. The "bull" is only 3.6"..using irons, it looks for all the world like a tiny pencil dot down there!
But I managed to keep most of them in the black! Best of luck!

Ideal:

I have a very nice piece of "fat" plush carpet that I glued a "fat" pad to. The Model 70 is bonified NRA Fine and I just don't want to put it through those rigors. It's ok for the range at 300 for a few shots but not for all the shots F Open requires (like Kraigwy said).

I bought the rifle in 1980 from the guy who bought it new, fired a half box, then safe queened it till I bought it. I safe queened it till about a year ago when my shooting buddy (from Wyoming and me from Ft Lauderdale) got me back to shooting rifles. I'm scared to death to put a scratch on it! Hense, the need for a new shooter.

A rifle chambered in .308 will work well for you. Recoil will be about the same so firing it will by somewhat similar. Look around at the pawn shops etc., there are a lot of used 308's floating around.
