Need opinions for a scope under $200

Have a old Rem. 700 in 30-06 that I need to put a scope on. The gun will only be used a couple times a year. So I can't justify spending $400+ dollars for a Leupold. Anyone have any suggestions for a good scope for under a $200.

Bushnell Elite 3200 in 2x-7x or 3x-9x come in under $200. I own a 2x-7x and they are pretty good scopes.

I've always been able to find Simmons 44mag scopes for under 200 bucks. I meet a few people who hate simmons but the three I own have never given me a lick of trouble.

I saw Bass Pro Shop has 3x9x40mm Leupolds Vari-X II for $219 and shipping is included. I think this is one of the best deal around on Leupolds.

CDNN has two types of 3x9 Redfields for sale, matte for $129, the other gloss for $139. Midway has the Burris fixed four power gloss for $138. Cheaper than Dirt has the fixed power Weavers for about $115, the fixed Nikon for $149 and the variable Nikon for $189. Several places, including Wal-Mart, have the Leupold Vari-X II for about $210-220, not much over your limit. Different Wal-marts have different pricing on the same rifles and scopes, so you may want to check out several stores. I just purchased a Redfield variable and the Burris fixed power. The local Galyans has a six power Weaver on clearance for $99, if you're interested, I can give you their phone number.

Ditto with LOCHFAL, I really like Simmons glass, and they're really fair priced. Never had any trouble of any kind with them, but I dunno about their warranty. If you want cheap, hassle-free stuff, you could go for Tasco, they've got a lifetime no questions asked warranty... That's fair bang for the buck to me.

Although they might be a tad out of your price range, Weaver makes fantastic scopes. Most of their models are under $300. I have one of their V-24's mounted on my Ruger varmint rifle in .22-250 and I am very happy with it. Great scope for the money. Just something to consider if you can stretch your budget and spend a little more coin. I am a firm believer in "you get what you pay for" when it comes to scopes. JMO of course!

Simmons Aetec. Aspherical lens system eliminates the "bending" effect that occurs at the edge of most lenses. Natchez shooters supply had them on sale for $120 awhile back. Basically a Simmons.44Mag on steroids.

Do yourself a favor and check out http://www.cheaperthandirt.com.

I recently bought a simmons 44mag 6-20x44 w/ target (1/8 adjustable) turrets for 117.00 which can be found up to 200.00+ elsewhere. Think it was the model 1048.

not a bad deal in my opinion. they also have regular sales on scopes as well, and a large selection.

Also just saw the aetec for 99.95 in SGN.

good luck!

Leupold 3x9 Vari II. I went with a cheaper scope, big mistake. I wasted a lot of ammo, time and money. Trust me you won't say a year from now I wish I would have spent $50 less on that scope.

Good luck
Sam

Since lots of people think that everything but Leupold is crap, G-U Wholesale has a Vari-x II 3-9-40 for 209.00 there no. is 1-402-339-3530. However, if you only plan to use the rifle a couple times a year (i'm assuming hunting season and some range time) I don't think you can go wrong with other selections listed.

BTW, I never delt with G-U, so beware until you hear otherwise.

If you don't want to spend the bucks for Leupold or B&L, the best low-price scope I know of is Swift. Anything goes wrong, they give you a new one, no problems. I've had a 3-9X for about 25 years, replaced twice. I recently put a 4-12X50 on my .221 RFB and really like it for under $200 including shipping.
BTW, my handle comes from my .220 Imp, not the scopes...:D

Thanks for all the replies. I think I'll head down to the Bass Pro Shop in Grapevine to check out the Leupold's. The gun was my grandfather's so it does not get much use. A couple of times a year to the range to make sure it's still sighted in and a couple times deer/hog hunting. Thanks for the replies. The knowledge a gain from just reading post is great.

Swifter,

Where can you purchase Swift scopes? I know someone who had a very hard time obtaining a pair of Swift binoculars. I think he had to coax a camera shop to place the order.
Anyway, their binoculars are very nice so I would imagine their scopes to follow suit.
