Need opinion on Wilson Combat AR-15 Brake

I recently saw an add for a Wilson Combat muzzle brake for AR-15s. It is advertised for $80 installed and delivered. It looks just like the classic bird cage flash suppressor. Any one out there have experience with this product?

Thanks!

That wilson muzzle brake is louder than hell. It is very painful to shoot without ear protection. My brother has one of the wilson upper. I would avoid it at if i was you.

I'll be honest with you ...

Maybe it's age, I don't know. But I really find useless appendages on firearms to be foolish. Perhaps others will disagree, but I just don't see where a brake is a necessary option for an AR / .223. Better to spend that money on most of a case of ammunition, a better sling, more mag's, etc. - something that actually has purpose.

Just my opinion ... I recognize that appearance is pretty important for some folks - witness the 'fake' collapsible stocks now available.

The Wilson brake is pretty neat. It looks like a flash suppressor, but is a post-ban-legal muzzle brake. Wilson's installation method is both legal and secure. The brake doesn't hurt accuracy and I don't notice much, if any, additional noise (but I'm pretty deaf...just ask my wife:)).

Wilson turns the installation jobs around very quickly too...about two weeks. I just can't stomach the look of a plain barrel on an AR (unless it's a heavy barrel). I recommend them highly...if only for cosmetics.

I completely agree with Jeff Thomas. I feel that the brake is useless. AR15 muzzle flip? What muzzle flip?

The brake, any brake, willonly make the rifle miserable to shoot for you and especially those around you. And please, don't put on a brake just becasue it looks cool...

I beg to differ - if you're shooting varmints, it's very nice to be able to see your near misses, so that you can adjust your fire.

Now if they'd just set it up so that you could remove it, or replace it with a non-brake device, that'd be great, but our government has seen fit to encourage deafness...

I have one on my Bushmaster carbine and like it . It is very loud but the AR looks better with it installed . Good luck , Mike...

I'm thinking about buying a post ban AR. I saw the add and picture for the wilson break and I liked it a lot. From a purely pratical point of view, I really do not see the need for it. However, it does restore the original pre-ban look to the gun. I used to hate the post ban look and never bought one for that reason. Over time though I've got used to the new look and may spring for one soon. How important is the pre-ban look to you? If it is important (and I can understand that) then by all means go for it.

Speaking only for myself; while function is paramount, the "looks" of a weapon are important too. While I wouldn't do something that would degrade reliability or accuracy just for looks, I am quite willing to have my cake and eat it too.

The Wilson brake, as well as Armalite's recoil-check, stay in compliance with the law and give the weapon a pleasing appearance. The Smith Enterprises post-ban comps aren't bad either, as long as they are installed in compliance with the maker's instructions ("dimpling" the barrel and using Loc-Tite on the set screws...I've seen improperly installed ones go downrange really fast).

As to loudness; A centerfire rifle is going to be loud. The muzzle brakes and comps do tend to direct some of the muzzle blast out to the sides. Since we wear hearing protection while practicing, big deal. Sans ear plugs, as in a hunting or defensive situation, only a round or two is going to be fired. Again, big deal. It's not like a pre-ban or plain muzzled .223 rifle is quiet.
