Need info on a rifle.

I recently acquired a rifle and need help with getting more information and possible appraisal of worth. You’ll have to forgive my lack of knowledge with bolt actions, so please bear with me.

- J.P. Sauer & Sohn.
- Mauser action.
- Chambered for 7.64 Brennique (Sp? - at work; don’t have the gun in front of me).
- ‘Quick release” Zeiss fixed 4X
- Commercial - non military
- I would estimate it was made in Germany in the 1930-40’s.
- Used, but in very good condition.

How could I find out more about this rifle? Are there any good online sources. The majority I find are in German. Serial Number listings? I don’t know. Help me out guys. Where do I start?

Thanks for ANY help,

While double posts are usually frowned upon, I would suggest you do just that: Copy and paste your question to the sister forum,

Harley Nolden's Institute for Firearms Research
here on TFL. I'd leave this post in place, too, and that way you'd have a double chance at having someone with knowledge see your question.

A couple of images might help, too: An overall view and one of the action area.

Sorry I have no information for you.

Best,
Johnny

I don't know much about the rifle, but the caliber is 7x64 Breneke (or Brenneke) after Wilhelm Breneke, a German gunsmith & cartridge designer.

It's very comparable to the .270 Winchester, and was a popular caliber in Europe at one time.

I believe that Remington brought out one of its "Classic Caliber" Model 700s in that caliber a few years ago.

Ammo can be found made by Remington; I've seen a couple of boxes at gunshows.

If you have access to Barnes Cartridges of the World, you'll find information on the round in the European Sporting Rifle section.
