Need info.........308 cases found at the range

I picked up out two cases (.308) out of a pile of .308 cases, mostly military, at the range a couple of weeks ago. I've attached a picture showing the cases. There are lines that look like the rifling of a barrel along the length of them starting at the neck down the shoulder and down the body. I can drag my fingernail across the case and can feel what appears to be "lands and groves" of a barrel. Any ideas on what these are or how they were put on the brass? The neck size is the size of a fired .308 case, not enlarged or deformed other than one may have hit when it was ejected. I didn't see any more on the ground with these marks. These two are "GFL and RT" cases. Here is a picture of what I'm talking about, hopefully you can see the marks clear enough to see them.

Yep, from a fluted chamber. Probably in a PTR or an H&K as both use the flutes.
Looks like hell, but works & even reloads just fine.

I have an MP5 semi, does the same thing. Don’t try to get all of that off. In a walnut midea tumbler 12 hours wont touch it with polish.
A pin tumbler might.
I just tumble till the inside is clean and shoot again.

Didn't know about the fluted chamber, had read something about it a long time ago..... I appreciate the information. All I know that someone shot a lot of .308 rounds and left the brass. Thought it was funny that those were the only two with those markings on them. Thanks again.

I think LaRue uses a form of fluted chamber as well.

XTRAXN..is their name for it.

bfoosh006,

Please read the board policy on posting copyrighted material and get permission and apply attributions as needed.

The first photo links to board member Slamfire, so he should get the attribution and it should be easy to PM him for permission to copy. He can also likely tell you what the gun was. The second one links to Hunt101.com. If you are a member there, you can probably contact the person who made it and give an attribution.

I know all this is a PITA. Thank the copyright litigators. It's been changing some as court decisions evolve, but copyright is assumed, even on the web, so it's safest and easiest just to get express permission. Most people are happy to give it.

I have seen 9 mm casings with flutes, and was told that they were from an hi as well. I wondered how much filthy blow back went into the action.

A friend who owned an H&K 91 back in the late 70s said that brass would go through the weapon one time with no danger of case failure of any kind. After that, the brass was relegated to use in his bolt-action rifle. If he tried using that same brass in the '91 again, it would invariably mess up, somehow.

That's a first for me, didn't know chambers are fluted. Learn something new. Must be pain to keep clean and resizing doesn't seem like a good idea.

It is mostly powder marks. The brass is fine for multiple loadings. Mine have been at least 5 loads. I have a ptr91.
