Need Ideas for installing scope mount on 1903A3

I have a 1903A3 (Remington) that was sporterized back in the late 40's. Never had a scope installed, just a Lyman 57 sight.

Now, I would like to install a scope and have settled on a 1-piece Leupold mount. My problem is that the rear of the reciever has been "turned" down so the scope mount does not sit parallel to the bolt. I want to stay with the one-piece mount but would like some ideas on how to overcome the differences in height, front/rear of the reciever.

I have played with the following in my head:

Build a spacer, contouring the bottom to the top of the receiver but leaving the top flat for the scope mount. As I see it, a lot of hand work and the use of bluing. If I do this do I secure it with separate screws or just longer screws through the mount? Use Loctite on the spacer or epoxy it to the top of the receiver? The difference is approximately 3/16".

Any other Ideas would be greatly appreciated.

How much differance between the rear of the receiver and the front. If its not too excessive Brownells sells shims to raise the mounts.

If its excessive then I would recommend using two piece mounts, You can get Weaver's to fix your rifle, Just get a higher one for the rear. Another option, (again I dont know how much differance we are talking about) but get a Low mounting ring for the front, a med or high right for the rear.

There is stuff out there without having to booger something up. I aways like to work on the cheapest part my self, I wouldn't do anything to the gun, but get the mounts/rings to fit.

Don't be afraid of weaver two piece mounts. I use them on my 1000 yard rifle. They've been on there for 30years of so and still work.

Many reworked rear rings are the same height difference as a Rem 700, etc.

Measure the difference between the front and rear receiver top heights.

Most one-piece top mounts for Mauser-type & Remington's etc, are built with a thicker rear section - so compare your measurement to a variety of mounts, or speak to a Leupy or Weaver tech rep.
