Need help with stainless slide damage

I own a Para Ordnance Para Carry.I've carried this a bit,and coupled with range box carry,it has accumulated a fair amount of minor scratches.Recently,I decided to try to polish the scratches away.Did a really STUPID thing, and ended up with some serious abrasion marks on the slide. Not very deep, but very visible.I took it to a friend that is a jeweler, but none of his buffing things did anything, probably due to the fact he deals mainly in gold and silver, stainless is much harder. My current options are to either find some way to SUCCESSFULLY polish this slide,or perhaps have a coating applied, such as Dura Coat or similar.I'd Prefer to keep the stainless finish, but I definitely want to lose the scratches.Any ideas? Thanks in advance...

Get a square piece of glass about 12"X12". Start by laying some 300-400- grit wet and dry sandpaper flat against the glass, abrasive side up. Then rub the flats of tha slide back and forth a few hundred times as you go up to 2000 grit for the final rubs. Go back and forth in a straight line and do not scrub it, but rub it. Please report back your results. Thanks.

I'll second that. You can stop at any grit when you get the finish you want and the scratches out. At 2000 you can shave in it.
