Need help with Scope

I have a Mossberg 100 – ATR in '06, and my only gripe is I hate the really cheap Tasco scope. I need recommendations on a budget friendly scope that holds zero well, and fits long action rifles. A lot of the widely available scopes that I have found to this point have not fit long action rifles due to their shorter tubes.

Any suggestions of something I can find pretty widely available?

I like Nikon Prostaff if you want over the counter budget friendly and descent optics. The ones I have hold zero just fine and get hauled in trucks, handled by kids, etc.

If the price point is king, go to Natchez Shooting Supply online and look for their remanufactured scopes.

The only long action rifles that will have issues with shorter scopes are Savage long actions. You should be able to mount almost any scope on your rifle. In rare cases you might need extension rings, but most will work in standard rings.

Bama, I guess if your two most important criteria are "economical" and "will hold zero come hell or high water" then my suggestion would be Redfield Revolution. Redfield Revenge is I.M.H.O. Junk, but the Revolution is a rock solid scope with DECENT glass. Tube length wont be a problem.

I would second a Redfield Revolution or Leupold VX1 (Leupold owns Redfield) They float around $225 +/- for a 3-9x40mm. Also they're made in the US and have lifetime warranties. Dont forget a good set of rings and bases!

Try optics planet, bass pro, cabelas etc. You might be able to find some good clearance deals.

I reckon some folks have never heard of ebay. It doesn't get any less expensive than that. And if someone sells you something that is broken and won't refund your money ebay will take over and reimburse you. I had an issue with a scope in September and eBay took care of me and I bought from another seller. I'm happy with the Nikon vx that I purchased nib for $102

Ebay is full of people selling stuff for way more than what you can get at swfa or optics planet. I wouldn't waste my time there.

Swfa is your best bet on a new scope, as they price match 110%. That includes shipping and any coupons. Like optic planet's 10% off deal and free shipping.

It's hard to suggest a scope without knowing what you want from it...

But as far as bang for your buck, can't go wrong with vortex. As long as you like the reticle. If it breaks, they fix it, no questions asked. Leupold has about the same warranty

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm simply looking looking for a reliable scope that holds zero and helps me hit the target of 200 yards. Just the basics that anyone would look for in a good quality scope. I don't need all the bells and whistles.

Check out the scope sales at Camerland of NY. They offer all of the popular models and some of the lesser knowns like Pentax and Minox.

They often have "open box" items which have been used as displays at the various large gun shows.

I have a Pentax purchased from them which holds zero well and is as clear as my Nikon. My favorites are 2 Minox scopes purchased from them which are extremely clear. The glass in the Minox comes from Germany and the scopes have a lifetime warranty. The last one I got is a ZV 3x9x40 and was just under $150.

Ok.... What zoom range do you want? Would you like illumination? What is your budget? Does your budget include rings? Do you like a duplex or german #4 or bdc reticle? How long does the tube need to be? You hunting in woods, fields, swamps, thick cover, food plots, etc? Are you hunting deer, elk, moose, bear, yotes, etc?

Without knowing any of that, I'm just going to throw two scopes that should fit fine and give good results at 200 yards out there.

Leupold vx hog. 1-4x zoom, german #4 reticle with bdc has marks. Perfectly suited for a hunting rig. Get the vx-r hog with firedot if you hunt at night.

Vortex crossfire II 2-7x. Has a choice of bdc or plex reticle, bit overkill on zoom for 200 yards, but not too bad on lower settings. Vortex has the best warranty I can think of. I've even seen where customers weren't satisfied with the scope they bought so vortex allowed them to trade up, only paying the differencd in price.

These arn't the only two scopes out there, you can go to walmart and pick up one of those burris or simmons 3-9x's for $80 or so and kill things out to 200 yards with it... It's entirely up to your needs/wants you have and if you're willing to comprimise or drop coin.

Google has made nearly anything available.

Money does rule. If I can get something a good bit cheaper by buying off ebay then so be it.

I have some higher end scopes for my target and fine rifles, but I also would recommend the Burris fullfield II, leupold rifleman, red field revolution. I have all of those in different magnifications and they all hold zero for me and clarity is pretty decent. People like Nikon and I'll say the clarity is good but I can't comment on durability as I don't own one.

A while back Nikon Buckmaster scopes in 3-9x40 were on sale from several retailers for nearly the same price as the Prostaff scopes. They are a fantastic bargain, IMHO. I have a 6-18x Buckmaster and it is a lot of scope for the money. I understand that they are discontinued, but they are still being sold off at many retailers.

As far as I know they have been replaced with the 'Prostaff 5' line.

I don't know if this is actually the case. I think what I am remembering is that a guy sent in his Buckmasters scope and received a Prostaff 5 as a replacement.
