hi i hust got my brand new savage stevens 512 gold wing from dicks and THE CHOKE TUBES ARE STUCK!! it already has the tubes i like in it but for different things like skeet i want to be able to change them. anybody have any tricks to get these things loose

call Savage Cust Serv....every choke system I have ever used replaced chokes easily....

They should not be difficult to replace, remove, screw in....

Just don't muck it up or do something that will void your warranty....hence call Cust Serv and seek their input

First - was it given a good cleaning?

Were the tubes in there already, or did you install them?

Was there a wrench for their removal?

+ 1 on OneOunces questions ..../ so we should wait to respond until we hear back from you ... ( ok ) ...

but new guns ---tend to have a lot of "grit" in the threads on choke tubes ... so I guess I'm not surprised ...

Is this your first "choke tube" gun ...or how much experience do you have with removing choke tubes ...??

I would spray some "Break Free" - or maybe "Shooter's Choice" into the barrel - give them 3 or 4 min and see if you can get them loose ..../use the wrench, so you don't scratch anything ...

Since its a new gun / if you can't easily get them out - you should probably consult with Dick's before you get too aggressive. I don't know if they have anyone there that can help you .../ or call a buddy to come over and take a look ( with some experience ) and see what they think ....

Is the gun unfired ??

yes they came installed and it was brand new. and yes it came with a wrench. does anybody have any tricks so to speak to get them loosened up?

"Break Free" or "Shooters Choice cleaner" ...are my choices...

Try that 2 or 3 times ....if still no go .....put the wrench in / tap the wrench lightly with a dead blow hammer ( Lightly ...) ....try that 2 or 3 times ...

But that should work ....

Note: they might have been cross-threaded at the factory ...

First things first ...( we need to help you get them out !! ) But ...

but once you get them out / get in the barrel with some "Break Free" and a tooth brush, etc - and get those barrel threads really clean / and well lubed. Do the same with the choke tubes...

Goal - is that you screw them in and out / by just putting your finger inside the choke tube ( and they spin in and out easily ) ...with no wrench needed.

Every time you shoot the gun ...spin those chokes out / clean and lube them and put them back in ( with just finger pressure ) .... If they fell "gritty" at all - clean and lube them again ...and again...and again - until they spin in and out !! ( choke tube wrenches cause more damage - than abuse )...in my opinion !!

Try some oil and just turn with the choke wrench they gave you. Ive never seen one that couldnt be turned out with a quarter. Thats odd

You might also try tightening them just enough to break any "seal" that may have happened while they assembled the gun, then try to to undo them. Otherwise, Jim's response about using a good penetrating oil is spot on
