Need help with MKII !

I just recently bought a Ruger MarkII and need to clean it. I removed the mainspring housing, but the bolt will not just "slide out" as the manual claims it should. It will move back about 3/4 of an inch then stop. It seems to be caught on something, but I can not see what and the manual offers no extra tips concerning this problem. So rather than try and tap it out with a hammer (and possibly damage the gun) I thought someone here could help.

Thanks Everbody!

It has been awhile since I did this but if you can't see anything obstructing the bolt when you look into the action, try pulling the trigger and pulling the bolt to the rear.

Here's a MKII stripping guide that I've found useful.

The takedown on the Ruger can be a bear. I've seen articles recently on some sort of piece which substitutes for parts in the MKII that is supposed to simplify and ease field stripping them. If anyone has info on where to get this item, please pass along what you know.

The takedown on the Ruger is easy. Getting it back together is a bear. Once you do it a couple times, there is nothing to it. I own two of them and probably only tear them down a couple times a year each. Therefore, each time I am trying to remember how it goes. I am pretty sure that pulling the trigger will do the trick.

The arm that hangs off the hammer is caught

This problem bit me, and it took a few tries before I figured out the problem.

Look in the slot for the mainspring housing, you'll see the hammer strut (the arm that swings freely on the hammer). This little doohickey is what causes problems during assembly, but nobody tells you that it causes problems during disassembly as well!

If the strut gets stuck against that pin you see, then it will prop up the hammer, and block the bolt from coming out. The solution is to point the pistol upwards and pull the trigger (or just shake it around a little) so that the hammer releases and the strut is free of the pin. Then you can pull out the bolt.

444 and Steve got it.

The problem with getting it back together is to make sure that same strut goes back onto the hammer spring when the housing is put back in. If the housing goes in too easily, the strut is not in the proper place. There should be some tension when the housing goes in.

You know, I really like my Mark II slabside, and I clean it as well as I can without stripping it. But when it comes time to strip it...I think I'll just get a new one.

I hope you are kidding. This isn't any kind of a big deal. You do it once, pay attention and there is nothing to it from there on out. I don't see anything about this that is any harder than taking down most other guns, you just have to know how.

Jeeeze guys----get a grip.

1. Get a Manual
2.Follow the directions---EXACTLY
3.Practice-practice-practice----till you get it right---then practice some more.

Taking a Mark II apart and putting it back together is easy-----don't let all these posts scare you off. I'll bet 95% of them never took the time to read the manual.

What Omaha-BeenGlockin said.

Read the manual paying strict attention to how the gun is oriented when doing each step. Benton's link is also a good one. Getting the hammer strut in the correct position is what stops most people because they're not holding the gun correctly. I actually got a discount when I purchased mine because the guy couldn't get it back together (I asked him how to field strip it before purchase). A buddy had one so I knew how it works but it was amusing watching the sales guy! Kinda like riding a bike, a real pain initially but once you get it you'll never have a problem again. And they are great shooters...well worth the price of admission!

Disassembly problem not in manual

Just to be clear, the hammer strut getting stuck during disassembly is _not_ discussed in the manual. However the manual gives a very good description of how to the get the pistol back together again.
