Need help with Garand

This may be something simple, but after re-assembling my garand, the action will not open the last half inch or so. I've stripped and assembled it a few times, with the same result.
I was out shooting today, and on the last round, it did not set off the round (bad ammo). When I tried to clear it, I had to tap the operating rod handle on the edge of the table to break it free. (not hard).
Help please!
Thanks
Dave

I'm 1,400 miles from my Garand, so can't help much. To help others help you, though, what's the source of yours? Original USGI? "Made-up" from various parts? Etc? Have you tried oiling some of the rub-points?

Regards, Art

Dave,

If this is a USGI receiver, I would check the op rod for unusual wear patterns. The first place I would look would be to make sure the op rod wasn't binding on the stock ferrule.

If this is one of the "new" receivers, my first suspect would be the receiver itself. These new receivers are not known for having the proper geometery required for flawless functioning.

It's a Miltech, circa 1989, USGI. It only has 40 rounds through it, and all but the last round worked fine. Lube doesn't seem to matter. The op rod does not seem to look unusual, but this is my first Garand, so what do I know? I really want to find the problem myself, as going to a gunsmith in my area (Vegas) will be expensive and probably not result in a fix.
Thanks!

DaveAA:
I have sent, by separate e-mail, the assem/disassem of the M-1 Garand. There are 9 pages and each photo is numbered so you should be able to keep them in order. I sent page #1 separately because I actually had it misplaced in the Data Base and initially couldn't find it.

In my experience I sometimes forget the small stuff. So when all else failed, I read the instructions.

Dave - As a basic test, you may want to try this: with the op rod dismounted and the bolt still in the receiver, check to see if the bolt can move to its proper position at the rear of the receiver.

If it can, your problem may lie with the op rod or a related part. If it can't, then the bolt or receiver needs to be examined.

Good luck!

Cliff

ahhh.. Good point. The bolt does move freely on it's own. what do I inspect the op rod for?
Mr. Nolden; thank you for the info, but I cannot open the main body of the manual you sent, some kind of computer problem.
