Need help with carry gun sugestions

Ok so here is the deal. I will be selling a shotgun to fund the purchase of a new carry gun. I currently have a SW 686 in 357 4", a Smith Sigma in 40, a Keltec in 9. I will be selling a Beretta shot gun and would like to get either a compact or subcompact and an other shot gun in semiauto. I will have about $1500 or so to do this. What direction should I go. I had even thought about skipping the shot gun and going with a EMP micro or ultra carry II.

Thanks for all the input to come.

You've got about a zillion guns to choose from. You should probably set your criteria and go from there. For example, choose:
caliber
barrel length
action - striker fired, traditional double action, single action

You seem to be favoring a 1911 style. I would go with the EMP over the Ultra. I owned an Ultra Carry II and traded it. I have not owned the EMP but have read nothing but good things. I have been considering it for a "next purchase" along with STI's Rogue. The EMP gives you a choice of 9mm or .40 SW.

In striker fired guns, Glock, SW, and Springfield all make compact, double stack models. I have the M&P model and like it. Being double stacks, the grips are thicker, of course, in all those guns. So, that's another consideration. You should probably go to a gun store, handle what they have, and see what suits you.

If you like double action, Kahr has a good reputation.

I am in the same position as you, I have thought about the Ruger LCR or an XDSC in 9mm. I just bought a crossbreed super tuck that fits my XDM and I believe the semi-compact will also fit it, so I am leaning toward the semi-compact XD.

You are right I do really like the 1911's although I do not own one yet. My delema I guess is that I dont know if I should or could justify the money for an EMP or the like. I do know that I want a 3"/subcompact. I guess I need to find a local shop that has a wide range of hand guns. That is a problem as most of them around here only carry a couple and I would really like to shoot them all in the same day so I can compare. As for caliber 45 would be nice but I feel 9 would be enough to stop the threat. That is as long as I can put 4 or 5 in center mass. I am really not a "brand" person and will buy or shoot what fits my need.

Get an EMP, you won't be sorry. My best frient has an Ultra carry II, and loves it. But he still wishes he'd gotten the EMP. They're sweet

First I would also sell the Sigma and the Keltec, just my opinion. I would definetly make a list of size, barrel lenght, how many rounds you think you should carry and what type of situations and clothing / holster you would be wearing. I carry a Glock 23 365 days a year due to its size, bullet capacity, weight and they are definetly one of the toughest semi autos I've come accross. The gun gets tucked in my waistband and rides nicely due to the fact that there aren't many things protruding from the side. I would definetly take the time and think this out if you consider carrying everyday. Good luck!

Decide on how you plan on carrying it. Then any gun that is comfortable carrying that way would be ok. Also you need to train and practice from different positions

you have a keltec p-11/pf9 and you aren't going to carry that? a lot people regard that as one of the defacto cc guns. why not? id like to hear your reasons for not carring the keltec. and if you arent going to cc a keltec, i guess you should sell it like ndbbm said.

also take in consideration weight. its gonna be on your belt all day long.

First I should say the reason I can not cc the Keltec is when I bought it I had to say it was for the wife sooo technically it is hers and not mine eventhough she has yet to shoot it...

I would not carry daily but rather 4-5 days a week. The situations that I would be in are not really a "high" threat area but could turn that way. I over see maint in multiple apartment and commercial communities. I am on call 24-7 and have been called out to building that have had doors kicked in at 2 and 3am.

As for the amount of ammo to carry I would say 6-9 rounds loaded at all times and if I were to get "called" out I would go with 2 extra mags.

I am planning on getting a crossbreed super tuck.

The frame size is very important to me as I stated in an earlier post.3 -3.5 barrel length. If I wanted to go larger frame I would just carry my 357 S&W

Thanks
Pete

its too fat. almost impossible for IWB carry. too big for pocket carry. outside of that, its a good gun, accurate, has a lot of good features.

I am planning on a Taurus 709 purely for the purpose of iwb

The EMP would be hard to resist in this situation. I just put one on lay-a-way myself. With $1500 to work with you can buy more than one gun. You should be able to locate an EMP for around $1050. That would leave you enough to put a down payment on another shotgun or buy a nice backup like a Glock 27 to use as a glovebox gun or something. :)

If you solely want something to carry use a little over a third of the money and pick up something like a Kahr PM40.

Thanks Playboy,

The longer I mentally debat this in my head the more I keep thinking that I have enough shotguns around for what I need and the EMP sounds better and better. I also just grabbed a Judge today also. That should be some stopping power.
