Need Help w/ Winchester Model12

Pulled out grandpa's old squirrel gun to see if it was a 2.5 or 2.75 inch. It is 2.75. I tried loading some shells and they don't stay put in the tube like my semi Beretta. The shells come back under the lifter a little and if I am not careful they will all come springing back out when inserting additional shells. Doesn't seem right to me. Anyone have any insight into Model12's? Is this normal or is something off and if off do you know the fix?

It was the gun that put meat on my mom's table when she was a kid. A 26" full "choke" barrel 16g.

Perfectly normal for the Model 12. Takes a little practice when not used to it. I just slide the shell in deeper with my thumb and allow the "lifter" to raise up and trap the shell.

May want to do a detailed cleaning,...

as some lube might be gumming up the functioning.
Also give an idea if any parts need to be replace.

shells popping out

With the gun unloaded set it on the table in front of you with the bottom loading port up.
When you push a shell into the loading tube look at the back end of the shell at each side as it is going in. About the time the base is even with the magazine tube opening you should see a little ear on a piece of bar in the inside of the receiver that should be tapered where the shell flange slips over it but won't back out. Is this tab worn off or gummed up closed?
