Need help understanding FTF sales

I am a little unclear on the laws concerning FTF firearm sales. Does an FTF mean that you are selling to a person who is a resident of your state, or could you cross into a neighboring state to buy a gun? What sort of forms are required, if any, in an FTF transaction?

Thanks for your help.

For FTF in state, check local laws. As far as FTF between 2 states, you need to use a FFL in the receiver's state to transfer to the buyer. Sounds good to just drive over the state line and make the sale, but that's a felony if you get caught.

MisterPX - That is true for handguns, but not necessarily for rifles and shotguns. There are many states that allow long gun transactions with residents of adjacent states.

Follow rem33's advice - Check your state laws and the laws of the other states.

Depends on the state. In some states you can sell long guns to people from an adjoining state as long as you do not leave your own state. Check your laws, then check them again.

The interstate sale (and transfer) of firearms between two non-FFLs is illegal under federal law. Interstate transfers of handguns between two non-FFLs can only be transfered from the seller to the buyer through an FFL in the buyer's state.

Long guns may be sold from an FFL to the (non-FFL) buyer from another state if the sale complies with the state law of BOTH states. Interstate transfers of longguns between two non-FFLs is generally illegal.

Intrastate (in the same state), sales and transfer of firearms largely depends on state law. Aside from the usual prohibitions, an intrastate sale of handguns or longguns is legal under federal law if allowed by the state.

No, it is true for all firearms. Direct transfers of firearms between unlicensed residents of different states is a violation of Federal law.
