just picked up a couple of mauser rifles and don't know what they are. hope someone can help.

one is marked with a quarter moon and star and the letters T & C, also ASFA ANKARA 1935

the other one has the same markings but much smaller with the date 1936

my bore gauge shows them to be 8mm

they are both in realitivly decent shape. all the wood is there and without cracks. the metal is pretty good also.
one has a piece missing just below the bayonet lug

the guy I bought them from thought they were 8mm mauser cal and they were made in turkey.

can anyone tell if they are turks and are these actions good to build on?
also what might they be worth?

They are indeed Turkish Mausers, built in the 1930s in Oberndorf for the Turkish Army. They're German ordnance steel, built on German machines, so they're good quality.

They should fire 8mm Mauser (8x57JS), and there's plenty of surplus ammo in that caliber out there. Any Turk would make a fine basis for a custome rifle.

Yes they are turkish mausers. Couple of thoughts on building custom platforms. I bought one because I have a barrel threaded for small ring mauser action. Turks are 98k actions (large ring) threaded to small ring supposedly. I can't confirm this as I haven't debarreled mine yet. Also, I have 2 synthetic mauser stocks for 98k actions and the turk action does not come close to fitting in either one. Length is good but the front ring is way too wide and would require a ton of inletting. These same stocks take german 98k actions without a prob. Just some thoughts before you get way out on a limb with the idea of customizing a turk.

Also one thing I haven't figured out is why my turk reciever doesn't fit snug to the barrel but has a thin front edge to the reciever, then a little space around the barrel, between the barrel and reciever. Seems like a good place for water to collect and rust things. I spose you could have a barrel lathed to fit snug, but a pre contoured barrel may not work well.

For $55 though I don't feel like I got ripped off, but I am wondering about the feasability of a custom rifle finances wise since I wont be doing most of the work myself. If its going to require a special stock or a different barrel to achieve tight fit between the barrel and reciever, suddenly its lookin like more than I wanna get into..........

Don't wanna rain on your parade, but just thought I'd throw that info out to generate discussion. I wouldn't imagine they are worth more than $50-100, unless they are in pristine shape.

THANKS FOR THE INFO GUYS.

I picked them up for $60 for the pair. I'll shoot the best one tomorrow and tear the other one down, gonna build a 257 roberts. it will go on a wood stock so inletting will be a cinch.
