Need help setting up Marlin 336 Scout Rifle....

Hello, I just purchased a new Marlin model 336 lever action in 30-30 , stainless with a laminate stock. It has the 16" barrel and hi-viz sights from the factory. I just picked up the Xs systems scout mount for it and will be either getting a Burris or Leoupold scout scope (kinda spendy!). This will be my woods /camping gun for protection mainly. My specific question is that I'm concerned that when I mount the scout base it requires the removal of the factory semi-buckhorn rear sight. I have seen Williams peep sights, etc. but is there a sight that I can mount on the reciever top (peep style) that will allow me to retain my fron hi-viz sight that came with the gun from the factory? I really want traditional sights as a back-up in the event of scope failure/breakage/etc. I really like the factory front site and wish to retain. Thanks in advance, Jason

Yes, the same people who make your scout scope base make a rear peep sight. Also, Skinner Sights makes a great peep that also mounts on top of the receiver. The height of your front sight will dictate its usability: Oftentimes when switching to a rear peep, the standard front sight is not tall enough to zero, so many people switch to a taller front post. XS & Skinner both sell front posts as well. :)

Williams FP94/36 will mount directly to the receiver and allow you to use your factory front sight.

It's what I have on my rifles. If you want a ghost ring, simply unscrew the aperture.

The WGRS, The Skinner, and the XS are all top-mounted peep sights, and WAY too tall to use the issue front sight.

The Williams 5D or FP mounts low enough to use the issue front sight, AND the XS LeverScout rail allows clearance down it's middle for such sighting.

That said, once I converted my Marlin to the scout mount, I NEVER had cause to remove it to use the peep (8 years, now)

FWIW, you "may" find that a less-expensive handgun/pistol scope, like the Weaver 2x28 Classic ($!50 @ swfa.com), will perform just as good as a "Scout" scope.

.

THANKS!

Thanks for the replies, on the Williams (Williams FP94/36 ) that was suggested do i need to drill and tap the side of my reciever? Thanks again, Jason

The Williams FP-336 mounted on the top of my 2006 vintage receiver using the 2 holes pre-drilled at the factory. I don't see the need to drill holes on the side of the receiver to mount the Williams FP.

+1 on the Skinnner Lo-Pro. I was able to get mine mounted so low as to need a _lower_ front sight blade on my Marlin 336. I love it & couldn't get rid of my side-mounted Redfield aperture sight fast enough. :)

Back-ups are overrated.

With a good scope, solidly mounted, (especially a scout scope) there is no need for back-up.

I have see through rings for my Remington 788, and have NEVER used them, even with the cheaper scopes I've had mounted on this gun.

Smaug, how does one get a good "cheek to stock weld" with with that set up? That scope is so high I wonder if my jaw would even touch wood.....
