Need help picking a rifle

Hey, I need a hand here. I want a semi-auto rifle in 30-06, but so far the only options I can find are a M-1 which seems to be hard to get ahold of, or a Remington 7400(742?). If money was no object, I would get a new M-1 but, sadly, I haven't won the lottery yet. I would like to have a magazine capacity of more than 4-5 rounds which, if I understand correctly, is the only option for the 7400. I am also hesitant to get a beat-up M-1 for the same price as a new 7400. I appreciate any help at all,

While I haven't shot it a whole bunch, I've been happy with my 742K in '06. I see these priced around $300, often with a scope. For hunting, you don't need over four rounds in the magazine, anyway. One thing for sure, they're easier to "tote" than a Garand--having walked a bit with each of them.

What can I tell ya? I guess, get a 2nd job, to support all your fun bad habits!

If you have enough money you could try a Browning MK II Safari Semi-Auto in 30-06. I have owned both the 7400 and the Browning. The Browning is real good on accuracy and I think a better rifle. Good luck on your decision.

How about a heckler&koch model kh940,it is not imported any more.I heard it was the most accurate semi-auto on the market. And h&k made 10rd mags for it.

Huh? Did you mean HK94? If so, that was 5.56 Nato. The HK91 was 7.62 Nato. Don't recall any semi-auto HK made in .30-06.

And both of those would cost WAY, WAY more than a surplus M1 Garand, which you can pick up for $600 or so. Think $2000+ for an HK91 or HK94.

Never used a 7400, but my Dad's deer gun is a 7600 pump in '06, and you can get 10 round magazines from Millet or Eagle I believe. Though I have no experience with these magazines. In fact CDNN has an add in the shotgun news with these.

I only know about them because we found them for my Dad as a joke when he jammed his gun because he forced 5 rounds into a 4 round magazine. :)

Yeah, I looked at Browning's prices and I don't think I could afford one even if I sold my trailer and moved the wife into a cardboard box <G>. I think I am gonna have to go for a .308 instead of 30-06, there seems to be alot more choices of rifles (ammo is much cheaper, too). I have been looking around alittle, and I am startin' to like the way the FAL's look. Thanks for the help, keep it comin'

Don't know where you've been looking, but IMHO http://www.odcmp.com/Services/Rifles/m1garand.htm is the best place
to find an M1. They aren't new, but I don't know that I've met or
heard from someone that was disappointed at what they received. A
lot easier to do if you're prior service, though...
