Hi, I'm looking to buy a 9mm, my first firearm, and I was curious on what information I can get on the p228. I've been looking at one and I was wondering what all of you thought. I am a small woman with small hands, so I would need to get a compact to shoot my best. If anyone could shed some light on this, it would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Handle as many different guns as possible, then buy a S&W (yes, a S&W) 3913.

Olivia,

The Sig P series in 9mm (all calibers for that matter) are fantastic firearms. The P228 is an accurate and extremely well made firearm just like all the sigs. I especially like the P226 and P229.

You might want to also take a look at the Glock 19, a compact 9mm...super reliable, extremely durable, light and accurate. Try to go down to your local range and rent as many 9mm you can and see what you like best.

Sig is SwissSpeak for quality. Good choice - and I don't own one. 9 m/m is also very adequate .... IF you use the quality/powerful ammo for duty, and practice with cheap ball ammo. I think about everyone will agree that a box of COR-BON (brand name) ammo will do the job, if you do your part. There are others out there also, but you've already nailed one down. Nail down Practice also, and you're set for Life!

The Sig 228 is an excellent choice as is the S&W 3913. Let me also suggest the Browning BDM. It has a slim grip, all steel construction, good sights, and is easy to rack the slide. You can still find these pistols at attractive prices. Many women who shoot the BDM like it very much. The BDM is one of my favorite pistols…Illini

I used to own a 228 sig but found that the sig 225 fits my hands alot better. The Sig 225 would be my first choice but I did like my 3913 before I traded it for a Sig 239. You might also look at the Sig 239 with Hogue wrap around grips, it is a nice gun.

For God's sake DO NOT leave out the SIG P225!!! This is probably the finest Sig in the whole line up. By going with the 225 you will only be loosing 2 rounds and have a slimmer grip.

The Kahr K9, P9 would also be wonderful choices.

Feel free to email me fro specifics on these weapons.

The Sig P228 is one of the finest 9mm handguns made. You may find the double stack too large and if so try the P 225 which is single stack or the Kahr K9. The best way to make a decision is to handle and fire as many different guns as you can to see what's comfortable for you.

If you don't like double stack then the P225 or P239, SW3913.
If you don't have a problem with the doubles and the size doesn't bother you go with the P228 or BHP.

The Sigs are outstanding weapons. My wife shoots a sig better than a Glock, by far, for some reason. I don't.

I'll say a few things... If you are going to put a LOT of rounds throught the gun, the Glock is the way to go. Less maintenance/repair required per 1000 rounds, and easier to get worked on (more plentiful glock armorers). The Sig is very popular with the Navy SEALs, but they have their own armorers. The Sig trigger after the 1st shot is xlnt. I find the high bore axis of the Sig causes more muzzle flip, but in my hand, there are few guns more comfortable than the Sig.

Shoot 'em both... you'll know.

PS: I'm adding this after reading posts below... my personal vote is with the Glock 19, my most-carried gun. Best compromise between size, wt, sight radius, capacity, etc. And of course, extremely reliable. Try one, and you might love it.

The 228 is a very fine gun however I agree that as a double stack weapon it may be a bit large through the grip, depending on the size of your hands. This also increases trigger reach which is a little long on Sigs in the DA mode. The 225 seems like a very logical choice, even the 239,if your hands are smaller than average. Marcus

The Sig 228 is an excellent handgun, and although it may be thick, the upshot of course is you have 13 rounds. I have a 228 and it is my girlfriends favorite. She is 5'4" and petite with small hands and she has no problem firing it, but she does have dificulty wracking the slide, to be honest, so do I. I would try before you buy. Also mags of the 13 rd. variety are very expensive, expect to pay $75 and up for Sig factory magazines. The grips can be sharp on the hands, as they "bite" a bit. I have Hogue grips and they create better balance but makes the gun a little fatter. Also get nite sites.

Good Luck with whatever you choose. Also try a HK P7M8, which is my favorite but you lose 5rds, and it will seem strange at first.

Hi Triggergurl,

The sig P228 is an excellent pistol. However, I suggest that you should try to handle other pistols before making your final decision. I recommend that you should take a look at the glock 19 (or glock 26 if you want a smaller pistol). Good luck.

Triggergurl, look for a gun range in your area that rents pistols. Spend an afternoon there trying the SIG and others, until you find one that feels right to you.

Good luck, and welcome to The Firing Line :).

Check out a CZ75 Compact while you are at it. These are very nice pistols and a good bargain if that matters to you. There is a relatively new "PCR" model with an aluminum alloy frame that is lighter than the other CZs, but the steel frame version will have a little more weight to absorb recoil. If you want to find out more opinions on these, do a search for "CZ" and I'm sure you will find a lot of discussion and comments about the CZ line.

And there you have it! Now it should be a simple choice! Now what kind of car are you looking at? Ford or Chevy?

And reread my post.

NiteSite,

NOT everyone will agree on CorBon......LOL

One of the things that helped my wife choose the glock 19 was the fact that the slide was easier to rack for her than a lot of the other pistols. The Glock 19 is also designed with smoother safetys and decockers sticking out so it won't snag as easily as some of the other models when you pull it out of a purse or waist band. It is a good compromise of size and function IMO. Good luck on you choice.
