Need help on .50 cal handgun purchase

I am wanting to buy a new handgun chambered for 50 cal and having serious debates on the s.n.w 500 or the desert eagle.. need advice on what would be a better buy..

I have a DE 50AE and two S&W 500s. They are both fun to shoot, but which one you think is better is based on personal opinion and what you plan to do with the gun.

I just shoot paper with mine and think you need to own them both. :)

IF you plan to hunt big game then the 500 magnum would be my choice. Other wise it is just a mater of taste.

with either round I think it would be a good time to learn to reload.

I don't do any hunting , and I'm just wanting it for paper shooting... I see that the 500 is like 300 dollars cheaper than the desert eagle and is also much more powerful but the desert looks cool and holds more rounds.. I figure that for the reasons I want ,I should just stick to the desert...

I own a S&W 4" M500 however only a 44mag DE. I feel the S&W is a better gun than the DE as it is less complicated and lighter. A lot of friends and family I know cant pull back the slide on my DE. Takes a good grip and momentum.
Both are however wonderfull firearms.

I would check out the "Bone Collector" version. Much nicer than the standard gun I own.

I've fired the Deagle .50, and was not impresssed. It's a big, expensive, clunky toy, a perfect example of a "Hey, look at me!" gun. Favorite of moviegoers and the uninitiated.
I have not fired the S&W .500. If I lived somewhere where there were really big bears, I might want one. I don't, so...I don't. In my "real world", a .357 or .41 Mag is enough for anything I will ever do. If I move to AK/MT/WY ( a possibilty, but a remote one), I will re-evaluate.

If I owned either, I would handload, because ammo for either is prohibitively expensive (if you want to practice enough to attain a modicum of proficiency).

I like the .50GI...it is fired from a 1911 or Glock frame, both of which are concealable firearms. The ammo is expensive, but is also reloadable. This is the only .50 that has any attraction to me.

Of course, I don't own anything I cannot carry or shoot somewhat regularly (preferably both).

Nice thing about the S&W, you can play with bullet weights, shapes and case charges. Not so much with the DE. And this is coming from someone that really doesn't care for revolvers.

.50GI?...

I'd check out the .50GI pistols from Guncrafter Industries.
The firm markets a few 1911a1 type single action pistols & a few .50GI caliber kits to convert standard Glock 21 .45acp models or 10mm Glock 20 semi auto pistols to .50GI.
The new caliber & Guncrafter Industries are not widely known outside of the shooting sports industry but I have heard a lot of + remarks about them.
The Kahr/Magnum Research Desert Eagle .50AE is more popular & very powerful.

If you have the time, $$$ & resources there are some good choices available.

Hello there,

A .50 AE round is no better than the S&W .500 when power is a matter. The S&W however is much more reliable, due to it being a revolver. And yes, the Desert Eagle may sometime get jammed due to it's freaky slide. Also that extra power exerts more recoil, it holds less rounds due to being a revolver (5 round revolver compared to the Desert Eagle's 7 round magazine).

But in all honestly, both are laughably useless in any real combat situation.

Regards,
Dardanos

But there's something about that 500 S&W Magnum that I like. I fired someone else's on the range and fell in love. I also fired someone else's DE .50 and didn't find it as sexy, but that's personal opinion.

If I decide to buy a hand cannon, it will be that S&W.

Just wanted to relate a story... I was on a field exercise and standing next to an M113, and they had the blank firing adapter on their BMG. Those things look like a medieval mace or something. The operator pulled the trigger and the blank adapter came flying out, hit a pine tree and put a 3" gouge in the tree.

But anyway, I can't imagine firing one of those things in a pistol but it sure looks like there are a bunch of people who want to...

I've got several 50's... my auto though is an Automag... much lighter than the D Eagle plus it's not gas operated, allowing me to load cast bullets

the revolvers are for sure more versiltile than the D Eagle, the D Eagle is a gas operated system which eliminates the possiblity of using cast bullets...

I haven't gotten a 500 S&W yet, but a 4" barrel is on my "to buy list"

& you guys do know the 50 browning guns are P shopped right ;)
