Need Help: New Product Evaluation

EQUALIZER

I have been planning a project to build a custom 1911 from the ground up. It will be my ultimate companion when it is complete :D. I want it to be reliable, highly accurate, and able to handle the hottest defensive loads on the market. While picking my favorite parts, I found out about a new barrel developed by Network Custom Guns, in Marietta, OH ncggasgun.com . I say "new", but the inventor spent seven years perfecting his product. The barrel systems are called "Gas Guns". They are designed using a linkless gas retarded blow-back system. The barrel stays stationary and is fixed solidly in place by a lower gas unit (replaces the guide rod), slide stop pin, and a special bushing that also acts as an additional recoil buffer. You can check it out at the link, but here are just a few of the features:

"*High velocity and pressure rounds are cycled on a 17 1/2 pound recoil spring due to the efficiency of the gas system.
*The Gas Gun ejects and reloads faster than any 1911 on the market today.
*Recoil is dramatically reduced.
*The Super GB feed ramp and chamber are designed for maximum reliability and +P velocities can be achieved with standard brass.
*There is NO locking lugs or mechanical lock up. This means no wear...."

There's a few of the features that caught my attention. I think I'm a good judge of character. The designer and I talked at length on the phone last week. He seems like a sincere pistol smith and not one to make claims that can't be backed up by his barrel. He quite confidently states that this barrel is far more accurate than any other handgun barrel on the market.

I want to check out a couple of his guns. We set up an appointment to do some shooting at an indoor range half way between our homes. I want to do an objective evaluation. Unfortuneately, a ransom rest is not available where we will be shooting. If you are interested in learning more about this, I am happy to ask him your questions and to test any sample guns he brings to the range. Whether or not things go well, I plan to post the results and responses.
Do you have any questions or comments?

Ask him if he is attributing the superior accuracy to the fixed barrel blowback design, what makes it inherently more accurate than a H&K P7 (another fixed barrel blowback design)?

Be sure to let us know about the recoil. With a fixed barrel and reduced slide mass, I'd think it would be heavier. I'd also like to see step by step operational drawings showing just how this system works. You know firing, unlocking, gas flow and regulation stuff.
Looks interesting. BTW: have any of the gun rags done articles on this system?

Hate the Idea.
The 1911 was designed to be recoil operated.
When you try that gas route your making it more complicated - I have seen other gas systems - and the gun neither felt nor functioned right any more.
For a barrel option I would opt for a good match grade barrel and have it CRYO treated... A .45 doesnt need to be fancy - just good.

There's another thread on this gun that's about a week old. And you might check the current issue of American Handgunner for a story on the gun. It mentions some problems with a fragile rear sight and some magazine spring difficulties.

Dont think I would get that adventurous with a carry gun.

I would advise sticking with the time proven design and parts, making sure you get the components that fit your hand and frame and finish that fit your lifestyle.

Dont forget good leather, and practice, practice, practice.

Good Luck!

Do you really want to be the lab rat for an unproven new system.
If it is not broken, DON'T FIX IT.
Buy a nice Kimber or Springfield Armory 1911 in the style you prefer. Send it to a master pistolsmith, such as Joe Bonar at Novak's, for the reliability package and if necessary, a carry trigger job.

OR Luke, just give in to the darkside of the force and buy a Glock.

I went to Clarksburg, WV Wed. and sorry to report that we got the time and meeting place confused and missed each other. I'll have to try this another time in the near future.

I still need some more questions. I am not even considering buying the barrel at this time, so there is no pressure to get it if it turns out to be something less than advertised. I will reserve judgement until I can shoot some guns set up w/the system. I just ask that others do likewise until I give the report. This will be strickly an evaluation for the benefit of TFL members and to satisfy my own curiosity. If it turns out to be something that meets my requirements, I will eventually get one.

Either way, if you were in my shoes, what would you test for and what would you wish to know? Thanks for the help guys.

For gas operated pistols, stay away from lead bullets. HK use to get a lot of P7s returned with complaints that the gun was poorly designed and would jam or cease to function. The users never read the advisory warning that lead bullets led to leading (no surpise to us here at TFL) which rendered the gas operating system inoperable.

Do test it out with various loads. The claim about the slide being faster and no wear seems to be controversial. Some energy is dissipated by the gas operation, but the momentum from the slide has to dissipate somewhere and some of it must go into the frame. How can this help but cause more wear?

Anxious to read your impression of this new system.
