It's a break top, maybe .32 cal ,6 shot revolver. SERIAL NUMBER 87207 and has a date stamped on top near the break open mechanism of 18 december 1877. ant assistance is greatly appreciated.

need help identifying this smith and wesson revolver

If it is double action and has a concealed hammer, it is the .32 Safety, First Model, 1888-1902; about 91,417 made of that variation.
If it is double action and has an exposed hammer, it is the .32 Double Action, Fourth Model, made from 1883-1909 with some 239,000 made of that variation.
If it is single action, with no trigger guard, it is the Model 1 1/2 Single Action, 1876-1892, about 97,500 made.
No value can be given without pictures to determine condition.

Not quite Mr Keenan,
All of the revolvers you mention are 5 shot. The OP says the gun is a 6 shot.
My guess? Being a 6 shot 32 cal top break, and S&W made, limits it to pretty much a New model 3 or New model 3 target, which were made in 32 S&W, 32/44, and 320 revolving rifle. Any of these are quite rare today.
If its a 38 instead of a 32 (common confusion) then it could be a 38 Winchester Double action (38-40) or still a New model 3. Rare still.
The other possibility is that its not a S&W at all, but marked "32 S&W" or "38 S&W" as the caliber designation instead of the model. Common.
We do need pics, as Mr. Keenan pointed out.

My goof, but not quite on the NM #3 either. Neither the NM #3 or NM #3 Target serials ever went that high. I also wonder if it is really an S&W.
And that would be my goof. I didn't check the given SN against the actual ranges of my "hypothesis guns".
