Need help identifying odd Springfield (?) Musket

I am trying to identify a .58 caliber musket for a friend. It appears to be a Springfield, but has a cheek piece carved into the left side of the buttstock. It appears to be the original issue stock, with no alteration.
In my opinion, there is not enough wood in an original Springfield stock for this to have been carved after the gun was manufactured.

The only known provenance for the gun is that it was given to my friend's father many years ago by a man who had been a clown in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show.

I am also posting pictures of powder and shot flasks that came with the gun. They may be original issue, or accessories that were acquired later.
Any help, or links to information would be appreciated.
