Could you folks take a look at this photo:

sfm1.jpg

This is the description:
The Dlask Mini-Moose is a custom AR-15 upper with an 8.5" bull barrel. It features a Dlask aluminum handguard, Dlask adjustable gas system, and Harris bipod. A Bushnell HoloSight tops the Dlask extended rail, allowing the short-barrelled Mini-Moose to shoot better than 5" at 100 yards. The Mini-Moose is available as an upper receiver, or as a complete rifle built on a Dlask AR frame.

My question is: Is this rifle legal in the US? I'm not much of a long-gun guy, I prefer pistols, but I think this one it pretty neat and was considering getting it. I'm just not sure that I can.

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

..Joe

My understanding is that you would have to get a federal permit for a SBR (short barreled rifle). I don't remember the fees, but they aren't anywhere near a tax stamp for a Class III full auto weapon.

What was the asking price for the weapon?

Looks like an AOW to me, legal barrel length for rifles is 16". You could own one with a NFA tax stamp and full ATF registration.

Legal if you pay the ATF fee. However, I suspect that the bayonet lug and flash suppressor has to go. Now, if the gun were full auto and registered, you can have all that stuff since those "evil features" don't apply to NFA guns. Go figure.

That would have to be registered as a short-barreled rifle (SBR) and would have to comply with the AW ban by removing the CAR stock, FH,, threaded barrel, and bayo lug to be legal in the US. If you were to buy a DIAS, you could keep it just as is since MGs are not covered under the AW ban.

Tax for manufacture and transfer of a SBR is $200.

Tax for transfer of a MG is also $200.

It would be legal as configured if: Built upon a preban receiver and all the legallities for registering a Shor Barreled Rifle are met ie. forms, fingerprints, photos, CLEO sign off, and $200 tax.

What would you have after you are done? A toy. A really neat looking toy, but you are left with something that makes .22 caliber holes in things. So much velocity is lost with that short barrel that the effectiveness of the .223 round is all but completely gone.

gee,
i gather you have to extend the stock, to pull the charging handle, with that cheek piece

exactly why would you want a magazine holder on a imp AR?

why have a bayonet lug on it at all?

if the goal is to make a fly weight, tiny AR, they certainly are loading this one up with doo-dads

a bipod?

Well, I can tell you that you would most assuredly NOT be hunting moose with this thing. I have to agree with previous posters - other than looking rather unique, it is very impracticable. If you want a true lightweight AR with the "cool" features, buy a preban and pick up a lightweight upper. As it is outfitted in the description, this thing would weigh in at or above a pre-ban with a 16" M4 upper and sans the light and bipod. This is truly a Hollywood gun - 'nuff said.

Well, it would only be for fun at the range. I don't hunt, and the only "real" long gun I want is an M1 Garand.

I just thought it looked like a fun piece.

Seeing as Dlask is out of Canada, I doubt that their particular models are legal to import into the U.S.

That said, you could file the SBR paperwork with the ATF and build such a weapon on a preban lower receiver such as one from Colt, Oly/SGW, Bushmaster, etc.

?

I thought that the tax stamp for AOWs like an SBR was in the neighborhood of $15 and things like full auto, suppressors, etc was $200. Am I that far off?

Yeppers short barrel equals a $200 transfer tax stamp. I looked into a MasterKey 12 shotgun to mount on my Stoner for fun. I forgot about that really quick when quote about $1700 for a 8 inch barrel modified pump shotgun and then add the $200 fee.
As for the Holosight it was said to come with that looks more like a standard Red Dot to me.
Didn't Snake Pliskin in Escape from New York carry something like the

What ever it is the velocity would certainly suffer and the effective range would be miserable. Geez, I hear the 14.5 inch barrel is somewhat lacking in velocity, imagine this thing
