need help figuring out what kinda rifle this is

its my buddys rifle, he got it from a great uncle who took it as a war trophy in wwll. it is a jap weapon it has the jap symbol above the chamber and has been sanded down to hide the logo. the bolt sticks straight out and the sights have the airel sights on the sides. i think it might be a type 99 what can i look for that will tell me what it is? and also what cal. it is any help would be nice thanks.
 
Hard to saw without pics. However, there are 3 symbols in a row on top of the receiver above where the mum was. If 2 of the 3 are the same then it's a 99 (it says type 99 in their characters) and 7.7cal.

If they are different then odds are it's a Type 38 and will be 6.6cal.

However, there are lots of variations to both of them and some conversions which were done after the war to other calibers.
 
With anti aircraft sights it has to be a T99 since the T38s didnt have them.It should be in 7.7 Jap caliber unless its been messed with.

If there are two gas vent holes on the top of the receiver its a T38 or a variant using the 38 action.If there is a single gas vent hole its a T99.

FWIW, both the Type 38 & Type 99 Japanese service rifles are known as "Arisaka's".

The Type 38 is the earlier, with milled parts; and theType 99 the later, with stamped parts - a similar set of differences, like the differences between US Springfield Rifles, Model 1903 & 1903-A3.

Actually, there are variations based on plant of manufacture. Some early Type 99s (like mine) had all milled parts. There were 4 variants of the Type 99 and 3 variants of the Type 38.

The Type 99 was the first standard issue infantry weapon to have a chrome lined bore. Its purpose was to enable easier cleaning and maintenance.

The different models of Arisakas are Type 30, 38, 44, 97, and 99.
 
I believe that you have a arisaka type 99. If it is a t99 it should be in caliber 7.7x58. If it is the t38 ( which I don't think this is ) it is a 6.5mm cartridge if I am not mistaken. If you plan on shooting this rifle, make sure that you clean the gun very well if you haven't already because you want every shot to be as accurate as possible because I believe that the 7.7 ammo goes for about $1 a round. yea i am really starting to think its a type 99 the symbols match and it only has one gas port over the chamber thanks for the help everyone
 
The Japanese "9" symbol looks a bit like a man kneeling on one knee. On a Type 99, the symbols run cross-wise to the bore; on a Type 38, they run in line with the bore.
