im finally applying for my ltc class A tomorrow at 9AM. the city im applying with in MA has a tendency to restrict there permits. one of the questions on the application is reasons why you want an LTC. Any suggestion? i came up with this

"Once becoming proficient with my firearm I intend on using it for the protection of my self, home and family, along with all other lawful purposes"

thx guys

In California its up to the sheriff to issue, but fearing for you life isn't a valid reason for wanting a CCW Permit. (Cant Open Carry here, few exeptions to that but for the most part its not going to fly)

My reason has always been: If my life is being threatened with deadly force, the time it would take to call a LEO (911 usually) and the time it would take for them to respond would be of grave consequence to me and/or my family.

Im sure someone with more person experience from your area will chime in soon.

I would just put "for all lawful purposes." That covers self-defense without specifically mentioning it...

I would write in my letter that I want to be able to protect myself and my family.I would also state that a few of my friends and family are members of various gun ranges and you would like to be able to go shooting with them and possibly join a club.

Interesting. I didn't know you had to HAVE a reason. I thought it was up to them to come up with some reason why you SHOULDN'T be allowed to carry a firearm.

Try something like "cuz I don't want some dude messin' with my ho's and my stash, ya know, so I'm gonna give him da bizznes ya know".

Or maybe " Because it's my constitutional right you dipstick".

Or, "people tend to get in a panic before I rob the convenience store if I already have my gun exposed when I walk into the place".

:D

I also live in MA.... Please take what I'm going to say as constuctive critisism.

You do not want to highlight that you are not currently proficient with a firearm.

In MA, you are not allowed to use leathal force to protect property, therefore you should not be stating that you will be protecting your home.

I listed sporting and personal protection, as headers and gave some examples for each. You may also want to list collecting, if you have interest in doing that.

Hope this helps...

Massachusetts, A nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to move back there.
I miss it and hate it, go figure.
So liberal and so uptight.
Sorry, minor vent.

"I travel often with large sums of cash."

How about that?

Whatever you do don't say "Because it's my right."
Libs hate that. hehehe

I have heard that many "may issue" jurisdictions want you to cite a specific reason that you need to protect yourself not just the fact that you think people should be able to; otherwise they would have "shall issue" laws. Maybe try "Work second shift and drive home through economically depressed areas further criminally affected by decrease in police patrols due to overspending by state and federal gov't on welfare and social medicine"... maybe just the first half of that come to think of it:D. Or find out what the stats are on car jackings, muggings, street-dealers and pimping in your locale. Street dealing and organized pimping are way up in Seattle, after being nearly extinct 5 years ago before the King County Sheriff decided to leave for D.C. and become a congressman.

All one need to do is pick up a newspaper or local news off the Internet and read about the daily barrage of murders, robberies, mugging, thefts, rapes, etc. Not wanting to be a victim is reason enough to carry.

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they are not out to get you.

Depends on YOUR police chief, some are a bit more liberal than others, it's also good if you have a "connection" Lived there and moved to NH, just for your consideration

"...all lawful purposes..."
If he doesn't like that, try...
"the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed..."
and see how he likes that :)

asking kind of late, aren't ya?

I don't mean to sound cruel, but the time to figure out what to put on your permit application is well before you fill it out.

If you have any friends in the LEO community I suggest contacting them for their recommendations. If not, then do what you can for research. Go to a range, or club and talk to fellow shooters local to you. See what they put on their applications.

I got a NYS permit almost 40 years ago, and in that place and time, the reason you put on the application was critical. And that was because it was entirely up to the county judge to approve for issue, at their discretion. One judge would only approve permits for personal protection. The other one would only approve permits for "hunting and sporting purposes", and if he saw personal protection on the application, he would deny it.

Its really in your best interest to find out what is "acceptable" to your local issuing authority.

It kinda sucks, but thats the way it is in "may issue" states.
