Need Help Fast -- Marlin 336 AS ???

My local gun store has Marlin 336AS lever action rifles (30-30 Winchester) on sale for $239. This would be my first centerfire rifle if I get it.

A couple of questions:

Is this a good price?

Is this a good choice for a first rifle that could function in a number of capacities? (home defense, hunting, maybe even plinking)

This price is only good for another day. What do you all think?

I say go for it. The price is good. I have one and I like it alot. I took it wild boar hunting and it worked great. I haven't had any problems with it at all. I get 1.5 inch groups at 80 yards scoped. Not bad for a lever gun.

239 is a fair price for the Marlin. 30/30s have probably taken more deer than any other caliber. For home defense a rifle is not the best choice, (IMHO nothing can beat a shotgun loaded with no. 1 buckshot) and for plinking there are a lot of cheaper alternatives for the price of ammo whether you reload or not.

Thanks fellas. I went ahead and took the plunge.

trlmech, your points are well taken. I have better tools for home defense, including a 12 gauge. As for plinking, I agree as well. You can't go wrong with a .22 pistol or rifle. I have both.

jfisk, what kind of scope did you wind up putting on yours?

I'm going to start looking at scopes. But first, I've got to get the offset hammer spur and allen wrench that were supposed to be with the gun. I got home, and both were MIA. I know the gun was straight from the factory because I watched the guy at the store cut the factory tape and unwrap the gun. So I may have to wind up calling Marlin to get these parts. Anyway, once I do, I plan to attach a scope, and I'm eager to hear recommendations...

Thanks again.
