Need help disassembling Ruger 22/45

At the EOSM a couple of weeks
ago, I shot my new 22/45, only now I can't get it to break down so I can clean
it! I can get the mainspring housing opened and pivoted out, but the bolt stop
pin REFUSES to come out! I've tried "tapping on it w/ a plastic hammer" as the
manual suggests, and am about ready to SLEDGEHAMMER it! Anyone who has one of
these pistols, please pass on to me the Spell which will unlock it's secrets!

Maybe this can help.

Buck Mark is worse--Don't lose tiny parts that insist on jumping off.

Ruger--Verify empty gun. make sure mag is out. Pull trigger to lower hammer. Point muzzle upwards. Pull out take-down lever and open. You got all that, right?

If bolt stop pin is stuck, apply lube, let soak. Push through from top with 1/2" or larger wooden dowel or other sturdy piece of wood. "Tap, tap, tap," not "BANG, BANG, BANG."

Best to take down and lube before shooting. Don't bother to thank me for that. Good luck.

OK, now I'm starting to get worried. The mainspring housing won't pivot at all, I can only get the latch out. Oh, the bolt will only open half-way. What's going on?

I used to have a MkII (traded it for a Garand... I've been thinking about getting another one), and I have friends that have MkIIs and 22/45s, and they all go through this.

BTW, if you think getting it apart is fun, wait till you try to put it back together. :)

First off: make sure it's unloaded.

Yeah, I know, but I have to say that... it's drilled into you when you take the NRA Instructor's course.

Second: put it back together (without magazine) and make sure that it still cycles correctly (cycle it a few times -- bolt back, release bolt, point in safe direction, pull trigger -- make sure hammer drops).

Third: make sure hammer is forward (i.e. point in safe direction, pull trigger). Rotate mainspring housing latch out and downward all the way -- it should point almost directly backward, nearly parallel to the barrel.

4: rotate the mainspring housing upward (the latch should now point almost straight up). Push the bolt stop pin straight down with your thumb. Remove the mainspring housing by pulling it straight down.

It may be stiff, but will loosen up over time. If it won't budge, spray it with some BreakFree and tap very lightly with a plastic hammer. It should not require a lot of force to remove.

5: slide the bolt rearward and remove from the upper reciever.

6: if desired, remove the upper receiver by holding the lower receiver and pushing the upper receiver straight forward (bolt-end to muzzle-end). Again, it may be stiff, but will loosen up over time.

If you still can't get it apart, or can't get it back together, I do have a service... cost is reasonable (steak & a beer) but only available within reasonable driving distance of Baltimore, MD. :)

A steak and a beer, eh? Too bad you're only, say, 1200 miles away from me!

I am about ready to take it up to my fave gunstore and get one of the guys to do it for me!

Darthmaum,
The link that NUMBERS gave you to ONTARGET guns should help alot. If not try this; after you make sure its unloaded and pointed in a safe direction, pull the trigger. With the gun pointed down at the floor undo the latch. With left thumb put downward pressure on the bolt. While doing this grab the latch with your middle and index fingers and use a lever effect against the gun and the side of your index knuckle to pull the bolt stop out.
I wish I could explain it with less confusion but this is what I had to do with mine. I have had it for 6 months and put about 5000 rounds through it already. I only clean it every thousand rounds or so.(mostly because it is such a pain in the a** to re-assemble)
But alas, The Ontarget instructions helped me through it. It does get easier as you practice.

Good Luck

Jeepster, I couldn't agree with you more! If it hadn't been for that Ontarget site, I probably would be in the looney bin by now.

I clean after each shoot, but I make damn certain that I really want to shoot the thing before I send one down range!

lol
I hear that, NUMBERS. The only problem is that its such a sweet shooter. There are some OLDER gentlemen at my indoor range that shoot on the clubs pistol team. (.22 only)
These guys are always bragging about their hammerlis and s$w's, so I pull out my 250.00 ruger and make them eat their words. (Usually, Damn kids) I'm 23. their youngest is about 60.
Sorry for ramblin. You guys have a great weekend. I'm off to the redsox game.

Normally, the bolt won't open fully when hammer strut misses the spring, I suspect that closing the takedown caused the problem you see. I've taken dozens of Rugers apart, and while some were a bit stubborn, none required a sledge hammer. :)
