-SOLVED-Need help disasembling a ruger mk I

Hi,
I have a ruger standard automatic pistol (essentially a mark I) that im having some real trouble getting apart. While taking it apart for disassembly, i dropped it, and the sear and the sear spring came out. The gun needs to be uncocked to get the bolt stop pin out, and i cant get the hammer to fall, because the trigger now does nothing to the hammer, because the sear is not in. So, if anyone knows how i can make the hammer fall without the sear in, or how to get the sear back in without taking the gun apart, it would be greatly appreciated

If there's no sear, you should be able to just push the hammer up, and if the mainspring is still in place, it would do that for you. The sear is the only thing that holds the hammer in the cocked position. :confused:


Are you sure it's the sear that fell out?
 
yeah, its definitly the sear that came out, and whenever i have the mainspring closed, it seems to lock up the hammer so it wont move at all, no matter what i do to it
 
and now that i think about it, the mainspring plunger isnt where it needs to be, when i close the assembly, i dont feel the pressure like i should, could this have somthing to do with it?
 
I'm having a hard time understanding what state your gun currently is in, but let me try:

You have the mainspring housing unlatched, and it can swing out of the back of the gun. The bolt stop pin is in and up through the receiver, barrel extension and bolt body. And the hammer cocked, but no sear is holding it.


If that's right, I don't see the problem. If you have the mainsping unlatched, there is nothing preventing the bolt stop from being pulled down. The hammer doesn't interfere with the bolt stop.

What am I missing?
 
yeah, thats exactly the condition the gun is in, but something is holding the bolt stop pin and keeping it from coming down. there is a slight amount of play in the pin, if i pull the mainspring assembly up and down, but its only about 2-3 mm of play. I have tried soaking the area with lubricating oil, and i have hit the top of the bolt stop pin as hard as i dare to hit a gun.
 
Then, short of some sort of extrodinary circumstance, there's nothing holding that pin in but spring tension and friction.

Try a nylon mallet or a wood block and a hammer. If you don't think that's right, time for the gunsmith.
 
Well, I finally got it apart, i used a brass punch (actually a drill bit) and a hammer, and hit the bolt stop pin a few hard times, and it finally came out. The pi was just rusted and corroded in there pretty badly. Thank you so much for your help and im sorry to take up your time for something this simple.
