Need help deciding on a 10/22 Scope

Looking to purchase a scope for my 10/22 with my tax return. I have found a lot of recommendations for these two scopes on the firing line site. I just want to hear any experience people might have with each of these scopes. Also what will I need besides the actual scope? Do they come with rings? I have heard the rail the 10/22 comes with is garbage and should purchase after market rails, is this true?

Forgot to mention the uses will be plinking, squirrel hunting, and possibly some matches in the future. Ranges from 10 yds to 100+ :D Also its a stock carbine model

I cannot comment on the 2 scope choices as I have no experience with either.
As for rings, if your spending good money on a scope, don't skimp on the rings. Same could be said for the rail, but, my normal Ruger rail has worked fine for me 15+ years now.

Make sure you get the proper width rings as some rimfire rails are narrower than Weaver style.
 
Please understand I'm not knocking Nikon here, I own a few Nikon scopes & think they are world class.

Having said that why did I vote against it? Because it does not have an adjustable objective lens & that is a huge deal at .22 RF ranges. You will find that no matter the optical quality a 9X (or a zoom set at 9X) will not focus close without the feature.

The adjustable objective is the single most important reason the Mueller APV is the better choice for a 10/22 (and the shorter ranges you'll typically be firing at with a rimfire). Whereas focus (and parallax) is set at 100 yards for the Nikon, it is adjustable down to 15 yards for the APV.

Make sure you get the proper width rings as some rimfire rails are narrower than Weaver style.

New 10/22s ship with Weaver rails. I recommend the Burris Signature Zee rings - they work great with the APV scope and are just all-around quality pieces.
 
The Mueller 4.5-14X40 AO AVP or APT scope is the way to go. All the features you need for a rimfire rifle. Possible the most recommend rimfire scope at rimfirecentral.com.

For the Ruger 10/22 Talley rings are the best available. This ring set mounts directly on the receiver eliminating the need for a Weaver or Picatinny rail. They are a perfect match for the 10/22 and Mueller APV.

Personally, I've found that the Talley rings do not allow me to mount the Mueller APV scope (which is a fairly large/long scope) quite far enough to be comfortable. Hence my recommendation of the Weaver rail (which can be placed to overhang the front of the reciever) and the Burris Signature Zees. YMMV.
 
well think I'm pretty sold on the mueller APV. Why would nikon make a rim fire scope that is set for 100yds? Do they have .17hmr in mind? Pretty excited about shooting with a scope, most magnification I have ever shot with was an acog from my devil dog days.
